Range temperature when you go.

I don't usually shoot outdoors in the winter. My club's pistol (and rimfire rifle) range has indoor shooting stations with outdoor targets. The building is heated by a woodstove. With a stove full of wood and a portable propane Heater Buddy, I've managed to get the indoor temp up to 80ºF when it's 20ºF outside. Once you open that window to the target area, though, all bets are off!

success. Shoot in all weather conditions. I need to know what my loads will do in any weather.so I can adjust for temperature changes during hunting season. My range in February and June IMG_20190217_174143.jpg

Been amber 5 years.

How cold is it when you go to the
range for load testing or whatever?.

I work PT at an outdoor public range that is open all year. So I have been there when it has been 95+* to -0*. Then we also shoot a winter rifle league that starts a week after New Years and runs 10 weeks. This year I had what I thought was a good load worked up. that was at about 45* and then the temp spiked to 80 and the load fell apart. Went from sub MOA groups to 2.5" groups at 100 yds.

Just shot some test loads last week, temp was 34* so that is close to the conditions we will be shooting at for the league.

Anything below a high of 100 I am willing. Unfortunately that means 5 months out of the year I won't do it within an hour and a half drive.

I don't like going when it's really cold. If it's in the 20s or below, I'm out.
We have a wide range of temps in the south. I've been with snow on the ground, and I've been when it was triple digits. I don't mind the heat. As long as I pack along plenty of water in the cooler, I'm good. Heat is uncomfortable. Extreme cold is painful.

I don't like going when it's really cold.. Extreme cold is painful.

Agree completely. before I retired I worked next to 350* ovens and then into -40* freezers. Have had heat stroke working inside hot ovens to near frostbite in the freezer warehouse. Cold does hurt!

Self righteous "range officer" bubba types dont go out when its cold. There arent enough poeple there to be an ignorant jerk to.

Come spend a weekend day with me at the 100yard range with 44 benches and see if you can keep up and not get anyone hurt by all the imbeciles that come out thinking they are Clint Eastwood or John Wayne.

I'm done with most of my load development, so I go to the range when I can enjoy shooting. While extreme cold and/or heat can affect velocities of some of my handgun ammo, it's never enough to affect my personal accuracy. I'm fortunate that I have my own personal range and can go whenever I want.

My range is a 45 minute drive through the mountains away. The reason I mention that is because road conditions are more of a factor than temperature.

I've worked outside for most of my adult life so I've had a lot of opportunities to try out could weather clothing. Long story short I dress for conditions.

I'm pretty sure it's got down to zero a few times when I was there

We must have been shooting on some of the same ranges. I know exactly what you mean.

I understand where youre coming from too, and Ive been a range officer myself (and not really by choice) at a couple of clubs Ive belonged to. There are RO's that are great, on top of things, yet, unassuming, and dont bother anyone unless they are really doing something wrong, then there are those who are just as Bcwitt describes, who must have no other power in their lives and now that they have it, youre in for it. And unfortunately, at least from what Ive seen, there seem to be more of them, than the others.

Personally, I prefer the ranges that have no RO's, and the few people you might see there, dont need one.

That sounds like you are one.

Handgun doesn’t matter, and the “pistol range” is 50 yards from the reloading room.

Rifle, I prefer to shoot in 70-80 degree weather. Hottest I’d ever be hunting in so if I don’t show pressure signs, I won’t have them at colder temps. But my final sight in is at the closest to the temps I think I’ll be hunting at.

Wind is the only thing that’ll keep
Me from the rifle range.
