Rather pointless (but still cool) 91/30 modification

I think that may top mine in tacticool factor, but mine is still more fun, I'd wager.

Gotta love a pistol-grip on a bolt action. Like seatbelts on a motorcycle. :D

This thread is fun--let's see some more wildass Mosins!

Here's a couple pics of one we just put together for a customer a couple weeks ago. It's an M44 with the barrel turned down to 18", turn-down handle, prototype scope mount, and KA-1830 muzzlebrake/suppressor

I want that rifle in Greg's post #50...oh how I want that rifle. Just for the hell of taking it to gunshows slung over my back to see the expressions. Totally worth the ~$1000 that setup probably cost total ($200 for rifle/stock/grip, $200 stamp, $300-400 Aimpoint-if it's real, ~$200 for rail).

my mosin monstrosity is just getting started.
so far all i've done is move the bolt handle to the rear of the bolt & notched the receiver. the handle is only tacked right now i'm going to finish it with a tig & install a badger knob. the gap in the rear bridge is going to be filled in since its no longer needed. i tested the bolt to scope clearance with a spare redfield mount zip tied to the receiver, medium height rings & weaver k4, it has about 1/2" of clearance on the scope with the bolt open. it will get a picatinny style rail, it looks like a rem 700 short action mount would be the easiest to made work for this project.
its staying in 7.62x54r but it will be handloaded with .308 dia.bullets & use a .308 bore heavy barrel. i'm still working on some ideas for the stock & i'll have to make it myself since i don't care for any of the aftermarket ones that are available.

kingjoey,

how long did that $20 BSA reddot last?

Actually, it worked great and had no problems at all. I was figuring that the Nagant was going to break it after about 5 shots but it worked fine. I pulled it out of the parts bin and tossed it on the gun to do the test firing with and sent the gun back to the customer with the scope on it, no loss IMO.

:D

Guess what I get to shoot tomorrow ;)

Here is the FBP16 next to a m44 and a normal 91/30 and a detail shot of the muzzle.

The Stock needed to be Inlet slightly, but the porting clears perfectly.

dirtyjim, where are you getting a new barrel for a Mosin? I've tossed around the idea of bubbasportifiering my el cheapo type 53 some day, but the barrel is pretty rough.

My Century G3 has the 12-hole "brake". Absolutely the most obnoxious rifle I own (other than the AR-50).
said MachIVshooter.

Yep. Try shooting one from prone or a bipod or something like that over soft, loamy, soil. The dirt it kicks up in your mouth and eyes and face has to be experienced to be believed. The brake on my G3 now kicks up dirt a little bit, but blows it to the sides rather than in my face.

Neat MN. That is actually something useful for these rifles, to make them into deer or elk hunting rifles.

dirtyjim .... very interesting deal you got going on there. Keep us posted on how it goes. Auh ... the labor of love:)

We're going up to the abandoned mine in 1/2 hour... pics will be posted tonite (possibly even video ;))

Good times will be had by all!

Customizing your gun seems like a great idea, but donig it so you can piss people off at the range? I wonder who the real jerk is.

Back from the range,

Even without having sights fitted yet It was still prety easy to keep on target (line the top of the muzzlebreak between the two posts that hold the leaf sight)

Blew a prety good hole through trees.

Surprisingly recoil was non existant, it kicked less than a .410 and the muzzleblast(for the shooter) was about the same as a 16 inch AR. there was a large fireball, but because most of the blast was ported sideways it didn't effect the shooters vision.

The report for those standing next to it/to the side of it/anywhere but directly behind the shooter was really quite impressive.

It was fun, lots and lots of fun. This is going to be one of my new favorite range toys.
