Well here's my take and what I've posted to start this topic on other boards.
Here's what people don't get. To "ease Society's fears and concerns with privacy," the Federal Government has so graciously said "People, people, please don't worry. Your data will be safe. We are allowing a private third party vendor to host all the information. We will closely monitor their safety and protection mechanisms of your data by one of our infinitely incompetent oversight committees." Also, the government will NOT be storing this data so you have no worries in regards to some sort of National Governmental Database being created where we can monitor your every move. <rolleyes>
Well, all the Sheeple said "ohhh, how wonderful! Our data will be safe. The government is going to take care of us, AND stop terrorism and illegals." There are so many holes in this flawed thinking. Here's the biggest and the one that should concern most people. Since all the DMV data will NOT be stored by the government, but a private COMMERCIAL third party, this makes it in a sense purchasable goods. Think ChoicePoint. So now, your DMV data is purchasable to anyone INCLUDING the government. What does that mean? Means elimination of some of your 4th amendment rights. No longer will they need warrants to check up on that database, which over time will come to serve as a central database of information. They can just create a PO, and wait on the invoice.
Think of Social Security and how it started as just a "retirement program" and even stated on the back of the SS cards that "This number is NOT to be used for identification purposes." Yeah, that lasted maybe 30 years and then EVERYONE is using SSN for identification. You can't hardly take a dump w/o giving an SSN now. So imagine where this REAL ID program and it's database will be in 10 years since we move so much faster now.
Here's the issue. Sure the gov't has everything on me already (supposedly). But think of this. Bars are now scanning licenses both optically and the bar codes on the back.

How long before every commercial entity is scanning your ID for whatever reason?
People say take off your tin foil hat. But how long before anything and everything we do is cataloged and stored in some database somewhere. Yes, I know the gov't has most everything on me, but why continue to add to the fire. This just makes it easier on them. That's like the argument from the sheeple that "I've got nothing to hide, so why should I care about the (un)Patriot Act? Or any other surveillance measure (ie. Wiretaps, etc)?"
Civil liberties are not being taken away over night. They are taken away slowly and gradually.
Folks, this REAL ID is a REAL problem and a REAL threat. It will NOT stop terrorism and it will NOT stop illegal immigration. Just like more gun control laws will NOT stop gun crimes. It may be too late now, but at least we have 6 more years. And if it's like any other government programs, I'm sure there will be plenty of states that can't reach compliance by then and will get an "extension." Let's hope your state is one of them.
