Heading towards retirement, I essentially gave up trying to shoot at 25 yards using iron sights due to cataract. Well, thanks to Vivity 100% light transmission IOL implants, I now have 20/20 far vision with great mid vision (beyond hands reach) with fair near vision needing down to 1-1.5x power readers.
So while finishing 22LR/.223 rifle shooting for the day, I decided to give 25 yard pistol shooting with iron sights a try and do some "comparative" 22LR testing like the 22LR comparison testing for rifle (Ahhh, memories of USPSA in the 90s ... Has it been 30 years already? How? ... Wait, I have a daughter who is 25 ...
)
Testing was done "off hand" with bottom of magazine resting on top of a cardboard box. Gen3 Glock 22 with Advantage Arms 22LR slide kit was used with "real world" dirty barrel from shooting several hundred rounds.
Range Report: 69F sunny day with light breeze
I started with Aguila 40 gr CPRN I have been using as reference for rifle testing. Top left group measured just over 2" (Not too bad). Then top right group measured 1" (Hey, I am back
). But then "What the *blip*?" 4" group on bottom left followed by 2.5" group on bottom right.
I decided to repeat reference Aguila groups and 2.5" 4 shot core was shot with one flyer to increase group size to 4.25" on top left. I am going, "Dang, is it me or the ammo/pistol?" and produce next group with three holes touching (Yes!) with group measuring 2" (So I am thinking it's not me
). By now, my multi-focal Vivity IOL is going crazy trying to focus on the blue dot on target and keep front sight clear (I am impressed by Vivity IOL technology as both target dot and front sight will quickly become sharp). Bottom groups measured 2.5" and I was ready to test other 22LR.
Armscor 36 gr CPHP (Yes, cheapest 22LR you can buy) has produced good accuracy for me with GSG 1911 with average 2" groups so I decided to test it next. Top left group measured 2.25" and top right group measured 2.5" 4 shot core with flyer for 4.5". Bottom left group measured just over 2" and bottom right group 4 shot core measured 2" with flyer increasing to 3". (I think not too bad for cheapest 22LR you can buy
)
CCI SV was my reference 22LR until replaced by Aguila 40 gr CPRN/LRN. "Old" CCI SV groups on top measured 3" and 2.25". "New" CCI SV groups on bottom measured 2.25" on bottom left and 4 shot core of 3" that increased to 3.75" with flyer. BTW, Aguila/Armscor and even CCI SV with lower muzzle velocity reliably cycled the slide and extracted/ejected spent cases without duds.
Curious about how Winchester M-22 would do (It's the only old/new lots of ammunition that's producing duds for me after 14,000 round testing), I test it next. Well ... shooting M-22 became single shot exercise in futility as rounds would fire but not eject and induced stripped round from magazine nose bumping the spent case in the chamber (Same thing that happened with Norma Tac-22). Groups measured 4.25" and 3.75".
Wondering if there is any issue with the pistol/barrel, I decided to shoot couple of reference Aguila groups. And just like that, 2.5" and 2.25" groups with reliable slide cycling and spent case extraction/ejection with no feeding issues. (So, it's the M-22 ...) Will do more different brands/weights testing on subsequent 22LR/.223 range sessions. (I am just glad I could see the target dot at 25 yards and actually make holes on copy paper target.
