Reasons we find to not buy some firearms, not to include brand

Not a fan of engraving on guns.
I do have a special edition Win 94 with a little bit, but it is minimal.
I have passed on a couple of otherwise nice guns to me because of it.

I'll pass on anything ported as well.

No weird logos or painting. I really don't like pencil thin "sport" barrels; seems like a rifle waiting to grow up. Don't like hump-backed A-5s or ported shotguns. Will never buy an old rusty fixer-upper or accept one free as a gift.

M O N E Y................... or lack of.

This.

I'm OK with warnings on guns I have as tools, even if I don't necessarily like them. Let's face it, most don't buy these particular pistols for their beauty, and it might help someone, sometime, once. See below examples of warnings I think are OK:

I will admit I have safe queens and will possibly buy more safe queens (my definition of a safe queen is one that doesn't serve a purpose to me as a tool for hunting or self-defense, but I will shoot at the range, on occasion, for enjoyment). For safe queens, aesthetics matter so warnings on those - maybe not so much.

Mostly, it comes down to the value I can rationalize to settle the cognitive dissonance every time I buy a gun since I am past the point of buying guns because I NEED them. That's where forums like this one are great. Everyone here helps me settle that dissonance almost every time I ask!

So really, for me, MONEY, relative to the value perceived.

Not that I can buy these in the UK, but I have tried them in South Africa or the US and wouldn't buy them:

* AR-15 or similar with the "sproing"
* Carry pistol with a magazine that has a heel release
* Carry pistol with a magazine safety (doesn't fire without the magazine)
* Carry pistol with the safety on the slide

These are the things I can get in the UK but wouldn't want:

* A .22 rifle without a threaded barrel. It would have to be a rare rifle that I wouldn't want to thread, but I am now a suppressor junkie
* A British-spec "long-barreled pistol." To me this is more like a carbine without a butt stock
* A suppressor that requires a guide-rod to restack the baffles, such as the ASE-Utra Dual Rimfire. The two I have will be the last I ever own, unless I need one for research purposes
* A .22 rifle which is a pain to disassemble, such as the two Thompson R55s I have. Those are 6 screws each. The reason that is important is because I am a suppressor junkie. Suppressors cause more regular cleaning of the action
* A .22 rifle that does not have at least a 10 round magazine
* Any rifle with a plastic trigger guard
* Any rifle or shotgun with plastic or GRP sights. My Bora BR99 is an exception because I could at least put a red dot on the Picatinny rail

Can't bring myself to buy a S&W revolver with the lock.
Won't buy an AR with cute or politicized markings on the lower; I don't put bumper stickers on my car, either.
No longer interested in .30 cals (.308, .30-06, .300 WM, etc.); 7mm and below except for the single .375 Ruger (just because).
After owning a couple and never taking a shine to them, 1911s (I know, "infidel").
And after owning a LOT of them because I wanted to like them and never did, lever actions; guess I'm primarily a bolt action guy.

Hmmm…

- I tend to shy away from 1911’s with a rail on the frame.

- Blue, parkerized, tennifer, cerakote, etc is fine on a semi auto pistol but I don’t like the way stainless semi auto handguns look. Purely personal preference.

- Aftermarket support. Any firearm I buy must have reasonably good aftermarket support for parts, mags, sites, holsters, etc.

- No logos, images, sayings etc. (like AR lowers with Molon Labe, etc). I don’t like it and don’t buy it.

Probably more, but that’s off the cuff.

1. No aluminum, polymer, whatever frames for me. Nothing beats the Feel of Steel.
2. No safe action/transfer bar single actions. My safety is between the ears and behind the eyes.
3. No safe action semiauto pistols. Same reason.
4. No S&Ws with the lock.

For me it would be anything that uses a design which previously did not feature a safety switch but because of import regulations or for whatever reason has had one added as this usually done in a ham fisted fashion. Examples include but are not limited to newer Winchester 94s that I think are made in Japan with the stupid tang mounted safety or the Tokarev style pistols with the safety that is just kinda drilled into the frame right below the slide and often cause it to jam in my experience.

For me, it has to be useful for something that I need or want to do. A few examples;
If I wanted to Varmint Hunt I needed a rifle or 2
If I wanted to Deer Hunt, same thing
If I wanted to Duck or Bird Hunt, same thing
If I wanted a home defense gun, samo samo
If I wanted to compete at 600 and 1000 yards, well you get the picture!

But I have always kind of wanted a 50BMG. And I could afford one. But I don't see needing to shoot into the next zip code. Make sense?

I’m really not that picky. I’m not sure what it is that attracts me to certain firearms.

I don’t like Rugers lawyer billboards but, I own a 22/45 and a MkIII that has it … I’m not a fan of 1911 rails or front serrations but I have a couple. I’m not a fan of double action pistols or revolvers, but I have a couple of both.

The one thing I won’t tolerate is a Series II. I remember when my name sake came out with them, so they would pass the California drop test … “F” California. We’d be better off if the fault line would break and the west side sank like Atlantis!
I just won’t buy a Series II.

I won't buy another SDVE or M&P pistol simply because I don't like spent cases flying over my head. They shoot great, accurate, reliable, I just don't like cases going straight over me.

I've purposely avoided owning anything .308, .270, .243, or 7mm for decades. There was nothing ballistically they had to offer that I didn't already have between my 30-30, 30-06, and 300wm.

Since I've been reloading .308 for my SIl and Bil, I bought a Ruger .308 and I do like it. Going hunting with it in the morning.
I'll probably buy a .270 and a .243 in the near future since I've been loading for them also.
I don't currently load 7mm for anyone, so I still have no real reason to get one, but I might anyway.

I lost my backside ordering a Springfield XD when they were first introduced. It came in, I did the 4473 and paid for it. Went to the test "range" behind the gun shop with a box of ammo, loaded a mag and for the very first time noticed "Made in Croatia" laser etched on top of the slide. Took it back inside and immediately lost $75 without ever firing it. Probably great guns and wouldn't even have bothered me if I wasn't assured prior to ordering and paying that they were Made in USA.

There are guns that have classic lines, like 1911's, SIG P series and BHP. Rails don't belong on any of them and I doubt I'd ever buy one so equipped...unless it was super cheap. Then I'd have it but I'd never truly like it.

I'll never buy a gun I think is ugly again. Cosmetically speaking, not aesthetically. Whether it's rusted, beat up, has a finish I'm not fond of, or some oddball (SIG Tribal anyone?) graphic designs. I figured out I can't actually live with things that aren't honest wear, and no amount of savings will ever make me like it. It inevitably costs more just getting it fixed to my liking.

I don't buy bolt action rifles.
I'm a lefty that was forced to learn
right hand shooting because of the
simple thing that when I was young
and learning to shoot, you didn't go
out and just buy a left handed gun
of the shelf. You could have one
built, or have a righty converted at
some expense, but since I was
a kid and my folks weren't rich
and I wanted to shoot and hunt,
I learned to shoot right handed.
It hasn't been too bad of a hardship.
But trying to shoot a bolt action
is extremely awkward and clumsy
to me, and that translates into
very poor accuracy. Using levers
and singles and semi autos has
worked just fine for me.
I've killed my share of birds and
animals over the years.
It has kinda almost bothered me
to have to pass up a bunch of
good deals on bolt action rifles
over the years. No sense spending
the money if I can't properly and
accurately manipulate the thing.

I won't ever buy another 1911. Never liked them in any real way, except some of them are nice looking. The 3 I've owned were totally outshot by guns costing half or even less than they were.
Engaving, it turns me off big time, unless it's really minimal. Rare that it's done that way.
I love matte stainless, and brushed stainless. Polished? Not so much.
Same goes for nickel. Not shiny is better.
I'm not a fan of striker guns. I have 3 and will not be buying any more.
I like railed guns over non-railed guns, at least most of the time.
Give me all steel, if possible.
DA/SA usually is what I end up buying.
No revolver owned by me will have a hole in it's side a key fits into.

Chambered in 270 or 308..... It's all black.... It only comes in one action length and I want a short action cartridge.

For handguns the only thing I really dislike is a gun too large (in my opinion) for the round it is firing.
Ironically, I like big guns that fire small rounds. If they sold a .22 Super Redhawk, Id be all over it. :D

Handguns with a safety that up is fire down is safe.
I really wanted to like a Ruger SR22 but that safety is a hard no.
As a general rule I avoid any CYA safeties like Smith IL or cross bolts on levers.
And then there's stuff that just ain't right don't mix tacticool and fudd together.
No rails and batteries on levers.

Short barrels. I'll see a listing for a gun Im interested in and as soon as I see 18 or 16 or 19" barrel I losed interest. I have no problem manouvering 20-24" barrel guns on hunts and in and out of vehicles and boats. All short barrels do for me is make me and my dogs deafer.

I was looking at a revolver the other day and I think I want it, but when I thought about it - I already own a competing brand of revolver, and the cylinder spins the other way and the cylinder release is activated the opposite way, and I thought to myself I really don't need to add that element of confusing to myself, possibly opens the doors for an error on my part and I think I would maybe find it annoying.
