Has anyone here done it? How’d it go?

It would be cool to do if it could be done cheaper but it seems like I’d be better of getting a new/different rifle.

Not cheap. There are breeching cuts that require a mill and rotary table. Pretty much any cartridge besides 7.62x54 will be a single shot proposition. In a nutshell, not worth the effort.

Is the barrel totally wore out?
If it's not totally wore out there are many Mosins that get back bored to remove bad muzzle rifling to give tighter patterns.
If you take it to a good gunsmith he should be able to tell if back boring will help your barrel.

Cheaper and safer to just to buy another barreled receiver. The threads, cuts and fitting are not like or as easy as a mauser and considerable skill and appropriate tooling is needed. Heck seen some twist receivers trying to just get barrel off.

If the barrel is not to be reused then a relief cut of the shoulder a few thousandths in front of the receiver is a good way to prevent that.
Yes that works. Did find it hard to install a donor milsurp barrel properly and headspaced with all the cuts/sights properly aligned.

Over or under timed? If it is over timed you can roll swage the shoulder to move some metal back or you can make a breeching washer out of shim stock similar to the way Commonwealth L1A1s are done. If undertimed then a gently kiss on the lathe will do it if you cannot torque and release a few times to get it to time up.

I think some of the early wartime mosins (with rough milled exteriors) were breeched as fast as they could leaving lots to be desired in terms of chambering and barrel seating. Correctly Barreling these may extremely difficult if not impossible. Pre war and late war seem much better candidates. Gave up on one wartime issue and just replaced it with a good barreled receiver. Don't forget Century (et al) sold container ships of mosins for way less than $20 (shipped).
