Reciprocity Gun?

Thoughts, what would and what would be your optimal choice given a 50 state tour?
Prolly the Gen 1 Shield 40 that I've been carrying since I was issued a CHP (2014) ..........

I'm very comfortable with it......................................and I dislike change......... :)

I can't imagine letting gun laws get in the way of traveling. There isn't a state in this country that doesn't have at least one redeeming quality that I can say something positive about. And (obvious bias because I live here) I can't imagine someone not wanting to come to California just because gun laws aren't favorable, since there's so much to see and do here. That goes especially for San Diego where I'm at, especially this time of year when it's absolutely beautiful outside (save for the earthquake we had today).
Agreed I am in countries that don’t even allow a pocket knife.

There also has to be a desire to enforce a limiting law in any given state by their LEO’s. Not all officers agree with their laws and they have vast discretion. In a national consensus scenario, the most liberal applications of the most liberal state carry law would have to prevail or the consensus cannot exist. It will always boil down to individual principle versus presence as it is now.

If it’s an issue, a factory or aftermarket fixed ten round mag for any 13-15 or higher round gun is just fine. Ensure the mags work with the gun and ammo of choice, then once all is set load them up and leave the big ones at home.

Stay safe.

Same here. I bring the smallest Swiss Army knife they make in my checked bags mainly for the scissors, and leave that in the room when walking about.

Stay safe.

Currently many states already have reciprocity with many other states.

Substitute 'many' with '50'.

Currently, when you travel you have to know the laws in those states you're traveling in/thru

Nothing changes there.

I don't understand why so many act like this is impossible. 🤷‍♂️

I wouldn't do a 50 State tour anymore, been to some of them I simply don't care to reenter.

The ones that don't want me or my money have been clear enough in their position.

They didn't or I wouldn't have already been to them and checked them off the list. Most of the places, I don't care to go back to, have all the things anti's love. Only criminals have guns and there are abnormal amounts of them throughout the area....etc.
Absolutely, jamorris.

Basura Blanca, I hope this doesn't turn into a California bashing thread, but the fact is, my wife was born and raised in San Diego (she followed me home to Idaho in 1972), and we've been back down to San Diego many times over the years. So, as far as "much to see and do" in San Diego goes, we've probably already been there and done that. And now that California gun laws have become so heinous, well, San Diego is just not that appealing - not to my gun and freedom loving wife or me anyway.:)
I guess that's one advantage to growing old - now that I'm 77 and my wife is not far behind, we just don't have many California relatives left to go visit. Besides, my wife and I determined a long time ago that the road between here and San Diego goes both ways. For that matter, so do airplanes - which is how my California brother-in-law traveled up here to visit us last spring.

Magazine limit, limits on ammo, various types of carry (open, discreet, concealed, vehicle) all taken into account I think I get backed into a peculiar corner in a hurry. I think it’s a total fantasy gun but a snub trr8 would be interesting. For guns I already own I think I go with the 30-1 32 long 6 shooter or the Miroku Liberty Chief. Very realistically I’m taking my 18.5” 12ga and my Davis d32 with me once I get the Davis sorted properly. This time I’m going to make a selector by hand out of mild steel and hope for the best. This hardened pot metal is junk and keeps breaking.

It’s a lot more than gun laws for some states. My sister and brother in law hit LA and San Diego tourist traps recently and came home with different shoes than they went with. They had pictures of the tent cities and poo piles in both cities. I was under the impression that they were notable but blown out of proportion by certain YouTube entertainers that have mentioned the problems, but turns out they were telling it like it is. Wine country is pretty in pictures, but we have hills and vineyards in KY too. Just can’t think I want to go to Cali. Washington is really not much different except for a fishable sturgeon population even though I think you technically aren’t supposed to target them, but catch and release of an accidental hookup is OK. Literally every other state I would be happy to visit, and gun laws wouldn’t be on my radar for any of them.

When I travel, I don't want to be concerned with researching mag limits, ammo restrictions, etc. Depending on what I'm particularly doing on the trip (not a hunting/shooting trip), I pick one of these three guns:

Kel-Tec P32, .32 Auto, S&B 73 grain FMJ (7-shot mag)
Kel-Tec PF9, 9x19mm, Hornady 100 grain FTX (7-shot mag)
Tisas Tank Commander, .45 ACP, Winchester 230 grian FMJ-FP (7-shot mag)

Probably these would do it. I bought three Sig 320 Compact 10-round mags with Blue floorplates to carry in 10-round states. I also as pictured, I don't put in the threaded barrel as I rarely use a suppressor on it as it gets CCWed. Some states don't like threaded-barrel pistols. The 320 Compact with its Red dot weighs under 30 oz. loaded and is ultrareliable and shockingly accurate.
The KS7 Keltec shotgun is almost pistol-like in its handling and legal in all states. The combo is very comforting.
Otherwise, I'd carry my old but absolutely perfect, and I'm accurate with it, Bridgeport-made Charter Arms Bulldog 3" .44 spl. at 20 oz.s IWB with two speed loaders.

Even under LEOSA, mag capacity restrictions are a consideration. WIfe and I still own a house/property in San Diego County, so we're down there at least a couple times every year (and we still have some family there). One of our children has lived in New York City for the past 15 years, recently moved out of the city to a village a little north. So, I've had to have a "travel gun" for quite some time, which used to be a 1911 (Commander sized) but more recently the SIG P-365 and 10-round mags, though I have also taken a couple trips with the Glock 43X. Wife would love some nationwide reciprocity as her licenses only cover about 30 states (most of which we don't visit).

Never mind. I figure I've caused enough disruption in this thread, so I'm bowing out.
I'll just say this, GEM (the OP) asked what gun would be, "your optimal choice given a 50 state tour?" So, I guess that would be my 1911, .45ACP. It would be my Glock G19 (my usual CCW) but I'm guessing that might be a problem in some states if they have magazine capacity restrictions?

When we were driving back and forth to Florida as Snowbirds, every state we passed through had CCW reciprocity with Michigan. I usually took 2 handguns. My little Ruger LCP for pocket carry and either my Walther P99 or Ruger EC9S for the car enroute and the bedroom. An extra magazine each. None of them had any large capacity, so no problem.

Hmm, it's a beautiful day here too. Once in a great while we read of an earthquake detected in the area but they are so mild no one notices except those that keep track of the instruments that detect them.

I am going to leave the OP's question alone. At my age TX and NM are the only two states I'm going to be traveling in and I know what is required. Basically it's put your gun in your vehicle and go and I do have a lock box for when I am away from said vehicle as there are places in both states I have to go that don't allow guns on their property. I don't like it but I have to live with it if I intend to see a doctor. Only my dermatology place has a sign on the door that says "CCW welcome, we support the second amendment". All others forbid it. I haven't found a welcome sign in NM but I only go to one medical center here.
