recoil 10mm vs 40S&W

past few months i have been shooting 40 S&W with a conversion barrel in my Glock 29 SF, because I tend to lose my 10MM brass at the indoor range. Changed to 10MM, major difference in Recoil. 40S&w recoil is nothing in comparsion. I can understand why the FBI designed the softer recoil round. Myself, i started out shooting 44 Mag, and due to my size the recoil is not a big deal IMO. Will start shooting only the 10MM, and just buy more brass when needed.

I love the feel of recoil from a solid firearm but I'm not as accurate so I stick with my 9mm for my EDC.

OP, what specific rounds are you comparing?

Of course, much depends on the loading. There are 10mm cartridges available that essentially are .40 rounds, and those can shoot pretty soft. Then there are real hot-rod loads that are pushing into .41 magnum territory. That's part of the appeal of the 10mm... it can be many different things. Sounds like you've been shooting stuff that's in at least the middle of its power band.

suspect low end of 40 S&w and high end of 10 MM . all reloads . need to pull a few rounds and check powder.

Have read so many cons for ported barrels, think i am afraid to purchase the Lone Wolf 4.6 10MM ported barrel. which at 4.6 is the same length as a glock 20 stock barrel. Ports are outside the slide

I think it depends more on what you're shooting either round out of. I'd imagine a 1911 long slide chambered in 10mm will have much less felt recoil than say a Glock 29sf. I also imagine a Glock 20, with it's polymer frame will have less felt recoil than a Bren Ten. I could be wrong but I think you see where I'm going with this.

That said, I fire both rounds out of my 1911 and I personally feel more of a push, like a .45 acp, from my 10mm while I feel more of a snap out of my .40 S&W.

i sent an email to lone wolf and asked if i can get an extended 10 MM barrel to 4.6 inch. same as the glock 20.. no answer yet, I can order that extended barrel with ports. But like i said earlier. have read so many negitive comments hate to buy and find out out i too dont like porting.

My S&W1006 shooting full power (full SAAMI specs) 10mm load is more pleasant to shoot than my much lighter weight Bersa 40 shooting regular commercial 40 S&W loads....it all depends what firearms are you shooting.....out of the same gun obviously the 10mm has more felt recoil.

Usually these kind of comments come from 45 aficionados which have a very questionable understanding of ballistics....

They keep dreaming that their pet round is more effective and powerful than the 40 S&W...dreaming indeed....

IMO, the 10mm is just a 40 on steroids. Perfectly manageable

Had a colt 1911 45 auto . thirty years ago. never did learn how to hit broad side of a barn, sold. Stuck with my 44 mag revolvers for many years.

Purchased my first glock due to high number of rounds 17 for glock 17. Liked it purchase the Glock 29 to replace my Ruger sp 101

I own and shoot glock full-size 22 and 20SF guns. Shooting factory ammo there is minimal difference (180g bullet, just going 100-200fps faster). Where I see the difference is in my IDPA speed drill groups. With the 40 S&W my 4 shot center of mass rapid fire is ~3-4in at 5yd. Running my 10mm withmidrange reloads at the same pace I get vertical stringing to let me know the gun is moving more. Slow fire at the range it makes almost no difference in felt recoil.

"Full power" .40 S&W loads from boutique ammo makers like Double Tap and Buffalo bore are equal in power to most "factory" 10MM loads these days.

As far as recoil is concerned - felt recoil is very subjective. I don't find .40 S&W or 10MM recoil to be hard or out of control, but that's me. Your mileage may vary.

I don't consider 200 grain @ 1,100 FPS, 150 grain @ 1,300 FPS or 125 grain @ 1,500 FPS to be weak personally. Maybe you carry a .444 Marlin derringer and do, I don't know. .40 works fine for me.

Totally right Paris. My 40 handloads run right at those numbers. That guy is a typical internet troll. He just repeats info he has no knowledge of. Some of them do not even shoot...just fantasy land.
