Recommend a 357 lever action

Looking for a 357 lever action under $500. I appreciate the suggestions.

Under $500 doesn't give you many choices... The new Rossi/Braztech rifles are actually pretty decent. A used Marlin would be great if you can find one. A new Marlin is over your budget and their QC still hasn't recovered yet. There are some other great rifles out there but for less than $500 there isn't a lot to choose from...

Under $500, I honestly wouldn't recommend anything. I would recommend that you save up some more and buy a Henry.

Not really most good lever guns I would recommend are much more $$$, sorry.
I agree that really limits options for sure.

I am not dogging Marlin or anything but Marlin would be a start, most of their line-up is a great "Starting point" for lever-action "Budget minded" shooters.... find a used one maybe.


I am not a mftr. either but it has always been my understanding most "Quality" lever guns are expensive to make for the Mftr. companies because they are harder to make.

a used marlin 357 is generally running around 600 from what I can tell. that's 600 and up. They can be had for less, stories abound, but generally plan on 600.

The rossi guns are pretty much you option. They're all right. They need some work to be nice, but all lever guns need some work from the factory. Contact surfaces need to be polished, springs need to be lightened, the nose of the hammer needs to be ground down etc. Actually I want to modify that statement, all rossi's and marlin's need work. They henry's are actually pretty smooth out of the box.

I wouldn't buy another.

They're split about 50-50 between non functional tomato stake and "OMG best gun evar" mine being an example of the former.

At best a u finish it kit gun.

I don't know anything about them. I'd guess they're about on par with a rossi. but that's a guess. I actually think the old ones were made by rossi. The new ones are made by chiappa if my google-fu is accurate.

A good .357 lever gun under $500 will be stolen. That may represent an unacceptable moral choice and/or legal risk.

You'll hear a handful of squeaky wheels, as usual but by and large the Rossi/Puma/LSI 92's are excellent rifles for the money. I would definitely take one over a crate of free Henry Big Boys, which are ugly as sin and weigh 2lbs more than they should.

I own 2 Rossi 92s, a 20" round barrel and a 24" octagon, barrel in .357 and I'm happy with both of them. They aren't going to win any beauty contests, but they shoot well.

I bought a Winchester 94 saddle ring carbine not long before they closed down. You mean to tell me I could get $600 for it?

I've got a Rossi M92 in 38/ 357. Robust, accurate, smooth action. Couldn't be happier.
