Since I'm in a new place with people I don't at all know, I'm discrete about carrying long guns to and from the apartment.

As an interim measure, I've taken to putting the AR or the Ithaca in a soft rifle case and putting that in a large rectangular bow case. This breaks up the outline and pretty much anything could be in the bow case, up to and including a keyboard.

However this is kind of clumsy (the bow case doesn't have a shoulder strap) and the bow case is still camouflaged.

I'm looking for a soft long gun case with a generic rectangular appearance, black without identifiable magazine pouches on the outside. Plain rectangular zipper pouches are fine, just not obvious magazine pouches.

Criteria:
  • generic rectangular shape, does not appear to have any specific purpose
  • preferably black
  • no identifiable external magazine pouches
  • purpose built for carrying firearms (ie. secures the firearms from flopping around inside
  • preferably has room for two AR/riotgun sized long guns
  • has storage for accessories that does not allow them to flop around inside the case (generic outside pouches are acceptable)

I'd prefer that it be a two gun case, hopefully with backpack type carrying straps, or at a minimum a shoulder strap.

I looked at a few on Amazon, but would like some input from somebody who actually owns one.

If you really want it to not look like a gun case, I'd suggest modifying your first two criteria:
  • generic rectangular shape, does not appear to have any specific purpose - A rectangular case looks like a gun case to anyone who's even a smidgen savvy
  • preferably black - Black is the most gun case color you can choose. Brighter colors (red, yellow, some stripes) look more innocent.
This is a bag I bought a few years ago. I can't remember who made it. (They kept the branding so covert that I can't find a brand label, lol!) It has velcro panels inside, so you can position the hold-down straps wherever you need them. It can tote my AK, Shockwave and a full-size handgun, with mags and ammo, all at once.

The only identifying mark is this logo embroidered on the front:

Edit: Here's one that looks very similar: https://botach.com/grey-ghost-gear-apparition-sbr-bag/

It's not the savvy I'm worried about.

Just about every bag I own is black, from camera backpacks to laptop bags.
Neither my AR nor my Ithaca 37 would fit in a bag the size you cited.

Then unsavvy won't be looking or even getting it.............

FWIW, I figured out what my red and black bag is. It's the Apparition Pack from Kinetic Development Group. It seems to be out of production by KDG, but the Grey Ghost Gear Apparition SBR Bag appears to be the exact same backpack.

I like the guitar case. That's the only case mentioned here that isn't too obviously a rifle case. Though ... unless you're a big husky guy it's going to be noticeable you're carrying more weight than a typical guitar. An observant person might come to conclusions.

I just got my case. It fits the AR and the Ithaca very well. I think it's going to work out just fine.

What case did you order? I'm looking myself.

I'm not familiar enough with musical instruments to know what all is out there, but some of the larger soft trumpet cases might be made to work as well.

The larger yoga mat bags can also be pressed into service. Just make sure the one being looked at has a large enough internal dimension to hold the gun.
