Recently read this article about how U.S. electric grid is inherently vulnerable to sabotage.

Also saw a headline a few days ago about how U.S. was woefully underprepared for EMP attack. So, question is what can you recommend to have on hand for a long term power outage? Any recommended prep regarding solar energy?

Relevant factors to my situation:
- 4 kids all under age of 10;
- firearms and ammo are not an issue; and
- have some, but likely not enough, freeze-dried food/rations that can be prepared with natural gas and/or open fire if needed.

Check your link, it didn't work for me.

We typically don't do SHTF stuff here, but make sure you have you're bases covered in the water, shelter, and food departments (basic wilderness survival except I'm sure your house is nicer than the tent you'd bring into the woods). Also figure out what "long term" means for you. Is this 2 weeks or 2 years? The difference is whether you need to focus on storage or procurement of resources like food and water.

If you're worried about an EMP, do some more research into what exactly will happen. There's a DOD report out there that does a good job breaking everything down (for example an EMP does not automatically mean that all FI vehicles will be inoperable). Solar panels will likely be fried unless they're protected. Also, look into faraday cages.

Unfortunately, our scope here at THR is a bit too narrow to include general disaster preparedness.

We can discuss, to a limited degree, questions of firearms and self-defense, but not survival, food prep, water procurement, heating, shelter, and other very important questions.

There are some great forums on line that will provide this sort of info.
