I'll preface this question by stating yes, I did a search and the results were inconclusive, so:

I have a SBS on a form 4, and want to re-cut the barrel shorter am I required to go through the approval porcess one more time, turn my head and cough up another two hunnred bucks ?

...and yes I know legal advice on the interwebz is worth what I paid for it.

No, you do not need to go through the paperwork again. If it's a permanent change you could notify NFA branch of the change so they can update the registry, but generally people don't do that as long as the gun can be converted back to the original length specified on your Form 4.

That's pretty much it. Send a letter to NFA branch and cut away. You already own an SBS and tax stamp, you're just making paperwork adjustments. A 10 inch SBS is just as much a SBS as a 12 inch SBS.

As I understand it this is the reason people list all the possible lengths they think they'll ever want/use on the form 4 so they don't have to contact ATF and get the form 4 updated whenever they change length.
