Red dot for GP100

You want a tube or a micro?

How much you wanna spend. If money is no object, get an Aimpoint. Buy once, cry once.

For the money id say the Burris fast fire 3, loonwulf sent me one to use and it's been great, tho it's on there nice riser mount on my ar-15. There forever warranty is very hard to beat. I also like the auto brightness setting then you have high medium and low settings. The battery is on top to.

This one has been a serious contender.

Recently picked up a 6” Ruger GP100 in 357 magnum. Looking to install a red dot and looking for feedback.

You have a couple of options.

I use a Weigand Rail on my revolvers with red dots.

I have used Primary Arms Advanced Micro Red dots, Ultradot Matchdot or even a Vortex Venom. I also have used Aimpoint H1 and T1 red dots. Honestly, my Primary Arms Advanced Rotary red dots have withstood 500 Magnum recoil with a Stainless Weigand Rail. There is a rotary advanced Primary Arms red dot that has a lifetime warranty.

It’s really personal preference.

Honestly, I’ve been thinking about having a ff 3 installed on a handgun. I’ve read several good things about it.

My reservations are:

Where is the emitter? Meaning, if you get mud in it, will it still work?

How tough is it? Can it take a drop directly on the lens housing? Although I understand there is armor available.

I tend to buy equipment because it’s tough. For example, I went with nightforce instead of swarovski because you can run over a night force. Swarovski is a much better shooter’s scope.

I guess it depends on what you need. If you aren’t going to stake your life on it, shoot...I’d look at the offerings from Vortrex and Sig too. As far as the Vortex goes, I think it’s the Venom you want. Change batts while it’s still mounted.

On the Burris the emitter is in a pretty safe area, they left room so your finger can get in there to clean it needed. it's water proof so it could be washed off if mud were to get on it. The housing looks very robust to, I think there rated at over 1000g's if it for some reason failed I still think you could e fairly accurate up close if there's no backup sights. the ar mount I have had ears and would be very hard touch if it fell or was hit hard. Best of all is if it stops working or breaks you send it in for a new one.

Thanks for the info. I’m seriously thinking about giving this a try. I was looking at an RMR, but need it as small as possible for a G48. Just need something I’d trust my life with.

Thanks man, I think I’m going to give it a try. At this point I’m just wondering if I have to go with suppressor height sites. At least with iron sites I wouldn’t have to worry so much about the durability of the red dot.

I would go to Weigand and get a no drill base and top it with a Vortex venom with the lifetime guarantee. [$300.00 well spent]

Weigend eh? I used to use their mounts on my race guns. They’ve been around a LONG time.

You have a lot of options that didn't exist 20yrs ago. If you want to use one of the micro reflex types like the FF, the short Weigand mount was designed for it. I have a couple to try but have yet to delve into it.

If you want to mount a full size optic, with the option of mounting a scope at some point, then I would recommend a more stable mount like their full length rail.

Craig, that is the exact mount I was referring to. I can't put pics on here but, currently I have a cheap green dot mounted on my GP. I have also had an Ultra dot 4 and a 2X Leupold. With that mount you have all the options for experimenting. Seems I am liking the green dot more and more.

I had a FFIII on a 629 with a Raptor engineering mount. I liked it very much.
