Went to Cabela's today, and there was an 1858 Remington for sale for $140 in the Bargain cave. Looked almost new. I seriously thought long and hard about how I could buy it and sneak it past the wife, since she's forbidden me from buying any more guns this year.

Damn.

Tell her that the government and BATFE has classified all flintlock/capslock models as "non-firearm antiques". So technically you're not buying a gun, you're going antiquing.

Simple solution to that is for you and your wife to keep seperate finances.

Me and mine always have. Twice a month we pool money to pay bills. Beyond that, my money is mine, hers is hers. I show up with a $1000 gun, not her afair. She shows up with a $1000 Coach purse, not my afair.

In 13 years, fought about money one time. Never again after.

My dad once gave my brother and law and I some advice. My BIL had just bought something and PO'd my sister. My dad said "sometimes you just have to do what you want and let them scream".

My dad obviously doesn't know my wife as well as he thinks.

You are talking big $$ there for the house. In the grand scheme, $140 doesn't amount to spit when you campare it. Take her out to dinner someplace nice and then a movie --- THEN go and get it. Never failed for me. Married for 40 years now (same woman too).

$140 dollars is darn near free, you would not have been buying a gun, but rather accepting a gift from Cabellas
