did anyone buy the rem 597 auto loader? i have had one since black fri. so i can now say after 1000 of little rem thunderbolts being shot through it that it is better buy and gun than my 10-22. its much uglyler than my ruger. the rem coast $149 at Bass pro. and it came with a 30 round mag and a 10 round mag and a scope. it rearly ever jams with the 30 round mag the 10 rounder sucks i never put more than 7 in it. it shoots tighter groups also. would like to hear your feed back on this gun.

Little Bro's got one; I like the stock - nice and solid as synthetic .22s go. The irons are good for quick shooting, but not so great for detail work as they're wide. Accuracy (with a scope) is on par with my Savage 64F, and it's a bit more reliable - though that may have something to do with the 64F having a round count of something like 6-7k versus the 597's ~1k.

I may be in the minority here, but I think 10/22s are ugly little guns. I'd much rather look at the Remington.

I've got one,I put the Vorq hammer thing in it,that helped the pull a little, but I'm more of a bolt fan, trying to get rid of the thing now.
It's accurate enough, just not my bag,I'd rather have something that I could use shorts and all without problems.

Accurate, reliable, and simple to upgrade. I am actually surprised that it is not getting the aftermarket like the 10/22.

I've got one. If it's more accurate than my 10/22's I can't tell it, but it's a good shooter. I like the feel, very much like a "big rifle." Mine has been reliabe, only having jammed one time, and that's using the Federal bulk pack ammo from Wally-World. I tend to use it as my "all weather gun." When it's raining or snowing and I don't want to carry my nice walnut stocks out, the 597 gets the call. It hasn't let me down.

I'm a 10/22 guy. I really like the DSP models with the checkered walnut and hardwood stocks, but if I was just looking for a 22 rifle to plink and hunt with, the 597 is a good solid choice at a good price.

I bought the Target Tech model that Dick's had as a special - the thumbhole stock model with the carbon fiber wrapped bbl. It performed well for me with the 10 rd mag and the 30 rd mag. You may have gotten one with the old style 10 rd mag. BTW, the Volquartsen hammer is a big improvement in the trigger pull.

I bought one about 9 years ago when Rem had a 25 dollar or so rebate. Net cost was under 100 dollars at that time. For the money it is a good rifle and will keep shots at or under 3/4 in at 50 yds. Friend of mine on the other hand had one that would not shoot accurately at all and sold it. My experience with the Ruger 10/22 (or any of the Rugers for that matter) has not been totally satisfactory. They simply do not exhibit much more than marginal, if that, accuracy.

I had lots of problems with mine initially. Purchased new about 12-15 months ago.

First range trip:
Lots of jams. Averaged at least one jam per magazine over the course of about 300 rounds or so. Noticed that the front sight windage screw was loose to the point it was about to fall out and the sight blade was sliding back and forth. Towards the end it was machinegunning, firing 2-3 rounds with each trigger pull and then jamming. Problems occured with the magazine that came with it and the factory mag I purchased off the shelf with it.

Second range trip:
After tightening the sight and giving it a good cleaning and lubing, I returned to the range with at least 5 types of ammo raging from federal golden bullets and federal champion to CCI Greentag and Minimags. Same jamming problems and machinegunning. Tried with very light lube and very heavy lube.

Called Remington who blamed the problem on bad magazines. They sent 2 new ones. Although they looked identical in every way, that seemed to fix the problem.

Accuracy is pretty good by my standard. Finish is pretty crappy. "Chrome" on bolt is flaking off badly, paint on inside of receiver is wearing off, rust on exterior of barrel is quick to form unless it's drenched in oil. Stock trigger is very, very heavy.

Interestingly, it now functions 100% with any ammo and with new or original magazines. Some days it's amazingly accurate for a $120 rifle, some days it's all over the map. Most of that is probably just me.

One thing I noticed, if you don't load the magazines to full capacity when new (and that last 1 can be a pain), it seems to cause problems. After a few run throughs with all 10 rounds, they seem tro break in and work well.

Now that it's running well, I'm fairly satisfied with it considering the price. For $120 I'll accept the faults. Had I paid more, I'd be P#$%ed.

I have one of those remmy's 597s and I basically pitched the small magazines and aquired the 30 rounders. Fantastic rifle. Shoots excellent, way excellent for money spent.
I like how it handles and the fact of how dependable this little gem really is.
Great with a scope. I give this gun one solid A

I got mine few months ago on sale for $139 included with 3-9X Simmons Scope on it.

I love it...very accurate and reliable with any ammo I tried so far, including the CCi Stingers...

I like it better than the 10/22....it has a "big rifle feeling" compared to other 22 Autloaders.

I got 2 30 rounds magazines in black....it look very nice with it..some sort of rimfire assault rifle!!! :D:p

can any one still fined them as cheap as the black fri. sales last thanksgiving = $149 with mail in rebate.came with ten-n-30round mag + scope. i would still pay lets say around $180 for this gun now that i no how well shoots as long as it comes with the hard ware

I bought one about 4 years ago, and have only had to make the minor adjustments to it. At first, it liked the Federal 510 leads... and didn't like the Remmy bulk stuff... then, out of no where it decided to change it's mind... it loves the Remmy Golden HP's now, as well as the federal copper coat HP's, but it doesn't like the Federal 510 Solids anymore... (will cycle the bolt, eject, but won't recock... wierd) CCI MM's work well, but it like the Remmy Goldens best... All I've done to it was reseat the guide rod screws and use machine gun grease on the guide rails... Accuracy is great for $125 rifle... :)

Cheers...

yes they do look good with the 30 round mag in them and they do have the big gun feel. i thought for sure it wouldhave cycle prablemos.but not realy not even close to as many as the ten 22 it likes rem thunder bolts and thats dirty ammo.cheap ammo thats loose crimp and the bullet wiggals around will jam now and then.

I just bought one a few weeks ago and haven't had any problems at all. It's a fun little rifle. Mine came with a Remington scope and no irons. Darn accurate too with the right ammo. I need to get some 30 rounders though.

I have one that I bought a few years ago, I have put over 4,000 rounds through it, I have only cleaned it around 4 times:p I found that .22's shoot much better with some lead down the barrel than with it perfectly clean.

not bad. gunsAmerica has them for $169 no scope or mags though just the rifle

Bought one at Academy in the fall of 2007 for +/- $170 with scope - no open sights and grey synthetic stock. Good shooter. Lots of fun to shoot. Maybe I would have one FTE in a 100 rounds. It simply wouldn't kick the empty out of the chamber. there must be a lotta room in there, because it would feed a fresh round, fire, and then the two empties would try to do the lambada to get out the ejection port, tying it up. Drop the mag, retract the bolt, let both empties fall out the bottom, and hot to trot again.

Sold it to a kid at church right before Thanksgiving last fall. He wanted a shooter and didn't have quite the cash to pony up for a new one, so he & I worked out a deal for cash plus lawn service.

I "upgraded" to a ruger 77/22 stainless/synthetic...as a lefty, I'm finding that i miss having a semi-auto rifle.

The 597 is a good gun, and if I ever run across another smokin' hot deal, I'll be all over it like butter on fresh bread.

ya that sounds about right lota shots between jams. dam fine 22

I absoutely love mine....much more than the 10/22.
And I do not think it's possible to get it cheaper than I did...the iron sight model with a Simmons 3-9X 40 scope and rings for $139...that made me love it even more!!!

saturno. did you pick it up at a black fri. sale. i got mine at bass pro shop. $149 black fri sale. and i love it

I got mine after Black Friday but was pretty close...one or two weeks later.
As I got out of the store I almost needed a surgery to remove the big smile on my face :D:neener:....I was ready to lay down $169 for one without the scope few days before, thank God I did not buy then....

At gun shops around here you cannot buy even a very used, beat up Marlin .22 below $130-140....but you can buy a beautiful Mauser 98 sporter (unknown gumsmiths) in 30-06 or 270 for less than $200!!! mistery of the used gun market.....I gave up trying to understand....

I've had my 597SS for about 3 years without any issues.

I previously owned a 10/22 that I also liked, but I prefer the way the 597 shoulders... It feels more like an adult-sized rifle and less like a kids rifle.

No big difference between the Ruger and Remington as far as trigger out of the box or accuracy. Just get the one you like better.
