My LGS has a NEW Remington 700 "Tactical XCR" with muzzle brake in 338 LM. Takes a 5 round metal detachable magazine.

It wears a green (fiberglass?) stock with black "webbing". I am pretty sure the stock is by B&C. It does NOT have the "bag" cut out in front of the rear sling swivel like some of the images I get on a web search for this gun. This particular rifle looks pretty nice - barrel floats evenly, trigger breaks clean and light, bolt action is smooth, and safety movement is crisp.

I haven't found this gun on the Rem website or their law enforcement website.

I am skitish about buying anything made by Remington though as I have read some pretty bad stuff about their quality the last couple of years.

This is the gun on Impact Guns website: http://www.impactguns.com/remoington-700-tactical-xcr-rifle-338-lapua-wbrake-84463-047700844633.aspx

Have they got their act together lately? Any idea if this is a currently produced gun or perhaps old stock?

I know a lot of people that shoot Remingtons. Has their QC faultered... Probably. Does that mean all the guns are bad... No.

I havent had a bad one and I cant rmember anyone I know getting a bad one.

If I were buying a precision bolt gun tomorrow it would be a Remington unless I went custom or AI.

If the rifle were chambered in .300 Win Mag I'd say go for it since the XCR TLR rifles have some very desirable features. However, my concern with this model would be the action more than perceived quality. The .338 LM case is basically a necked down and shortened .416 Rigby and most manufactures that make rifles chambered for .338 LM or .416 Rigby typically use larger and more robust actions. I would suggest that you look at other options such as a Savage if you're looking for an entry level .338 LM. If money allows, a Sako TRG or AI would be the way to go. For the record, I own an AI AW in .338 LM and I have nothing but good things to say about the cartridge.

For $2000, I'd have a barreled action built/trued with my spec details then get a nice chassis to drop it in. It may cost a bit more, buy you know you're going to ditch that stock after the first firing. There are some deals on the TRG 338s out there.

Or even look to build a 338 Edge (338/300).. based off the 300RUM cartridge it uses a standard magnum action and is less expensive to reload than the LM with the same ballistics.

I recently got a Savage 300WM I may order an Edge barrel for and just screw it on to see how it runs. Savage gives you lots of options.

Havent had good luck with mine.

I have fired 250 rounds out of mine. It has performed so poorly that I just dropped it off to have a Lilja Barrel put on. The rifle averaged about 4MOA. Sometimes if the sky was lined perfectly and Jupiter's pull wasn't affecting pluto, it would shoot sub half inch at 100M, but the temperature would change and the group would grow by an inch or two. I checked the scope on another rifle along with the base and rings. My final guess is the barrel was just poor. As an added insult, I took my TC Encore pistol out and shot a 3.6" group at 400 yards. Needless to say I am very disappointed to have spent $1875 for something my pistol can out shoot.
