I am helping a friend set up his first rifle since childhood and he's decided on a Remington Model 7. I'm trying to help him with the scope and was thinking about using the Leupold "DD" scope mounting system with the one piece base. (He's ordered a Leupold Ultralight 2x7 scope)

There is a Rem Model 700 base, will this work on the Model 7?

A two piece base will fit (since the Model 7 is a short action Model 700). A single piece base will not.

Do you self a big favor and put a Weaver style base on it. They are, in general, at least as strong and you have a lot more options for the rings.

The model 7 action is shorter than a short action 700 and it has a larger ejection port. I doubt if any 700 bases would work, but sometimes unexpected things happen. Also some model 7's only have 3 holes drilled and tapped, 2 on the front of the receiver, and 1 on the back. You must use a one piece base with these or have a 2nd hole drilled and tapped. Newer model 7's have 4 holes.

no, it is not.

a 7 has a different rear bridge contour and less material. also, older 7's only had 1 screw in the rear, and 2 up front. more recently remington started tapping a second hole in the rear, but the 2 holes are close together.

sometimes a 7 and 700 can look similiar, but they are unique rifles. a 700 short action is the short version of a 700. a model 7 is a different rifle alltogether.

if you ever want to prove this to yourself, get a 1-piece 700 base and screw the front 2 screws down on a 7. you will see a prominent gap between the base and the action on the rear. do not torque the rear of the base down to fit - it causes all sorts of accuracy problems. likewise, if you put a 2-piece set for a 700 on a 7 your scope will not fit right. if you force the issue this puts serious stress on the scope and will cause accuracy issues w/ the receiver.
