Remington 1100 receiver

A co-worker of mine bought an 1100 from a guy for $25....Well the firearm was laying in a soft case in a basement for 10 years. I traced the serial nember and it was manufactured in 1998. My problem is that he wants it refinished but all the finish on the left side of the reciever is gone. I am not sure what the finish is or the type of metal it is. I dont think I could blend it good with duracoat. The barrel is accually in good shape, Its hard to believe it was caused by rust, almost like some kind of chemical because the wood has no water damage. Anyone have any suggestions of how I can remove the finish? the receiver isnt pitted or rusted. Its almost like acid or some other harsh chemical ate it off the one side. I want to avoid anything abrasive because of the engraving.

Bead blasting will not hurt the engraving in the slightest, and will remove whatever is left of the old finish.

It will also give your Duracoat a good surface to stick too.

That's what I would do.

You can also buy bluing remover which is a mild acid and will thake the old bluing off.
But you would still need to rough up the surface somehow for good paint bond.

Thanks guys! My grandpa is a gunsmith but old school. He doesn't have a blasting cabinet but my father does. The barrel is an easy touch up fix. My only concern is the receiver because it doesn't seem to be a very hard steel. Almost like an alloy or pot metal. Would a blaster be safe to use on it? I hate when people bring $25 garage sale buys to repair. .

Any 1100 I ever seen had a steel receiver.

See if a magnet will stick to it.
If it does, it's steel.

If it doesn't it's not an 1100.
