Bought a used Remington model 31L recently. This one has a shortened barrel of 21 1/2 inches and the aluminum alloy receiver. Believe it kicks the most of the many guns I've had over the past 55 years. Weighed it today: 5.98 lbs. Can you believe? No wonder it kicks.

But I really like this gun for it's quality and slick action. Must have the best recoil pad I can find for this gun. It has a solid rib, which I also like.

1800 plus fps slugs from the bench was an experience! Hard, factory butt plate.

I have had two "pre-Mossberg 500s". One 12ga 30" and 16ga 28". Both had aluminum receivers w/steel insert into which barrels threaded. They were made for few years in late 40 when Remington turnout was very high. Neat guns with very sophisticated barrel release nut. It is not good idea to shoot max velocity slugs through. If 12ga several companies make slugs in 1200fps to 1350fps. Those are ones I would try.
Interestingly I have never seen alloy framed 31 w/ letter "L" stamped. If you want more info on those ask "Researcher" at Shotgun World forums he has pile of info on those including old Rem catalogs.
