I just wanted to see what experiences any of you have had with the Remington model 597 regarding accuracy, reliability, take-down issues etc.
Pictures?

:) :) :D

This should probably be in the rifle forum, but here goes. I love my 597. I have the .22 LR, and it shoots great. Goes bang everytime. Some of the older ones had some magazine issues, but the new ones seem to work pretty good. Take down is a little tricky the first time, but once you do it once or twice it's fine. Accuracy is great out of the box.

Sorry, no pics.

A couple years ago, I had the Remington 597 chambered in .22WMR.
Mine had the dreaded heavy trigger. Heavy, but crisp with no grit, creep or over-travel. It also seemed quite accurate. I took a feral chicken-killing dog with it, no problems at all (quite impressive results, actually).

My 597 loved Remington's 40gr JSP.

Im very excited about that new 30 round mag!!!:) Hopfully it will be better then the factory crap!!:banghead:

Had a new 597 this year. Had the new mag too. Jammed all the time (every third to fourth shot). Sold it.

I think maybe the guide rods had been over torqued from the factory as they were VERY tight when I broke it down. Think maybe they were bent from said torque as the thing never would work well. tried 10 different types of ammo too.

It was very accurate, but it had to go.

I have one, and it jammed constantly. I even tried 5 different mags with it. Then I came across a thread over at rimfirecental, and it told you how to modify your mags. Took maybe 10 minutes, and problem solved. It is now very reliable, and accurate enough.

I've had issues with the bolt not cycling freely after 200 or so rounds. I think it's powder on the guide rods. I love it otherwise.

I have the $130 camo stocked Wal-Mart special, and it is a great rifle. Shoots accurately, feeds reliably, goes bang every time- even with the cheapo bulk box stuff. QC is apparently a bit uneven with them, but if you get a good one, then you have a fantastic little rifle.

Go to the Remington forum at www.rimfirecentral.com for all you never wanted to know.

I bought an ex-girlfriend one while we were going out. I thought it wasn't such a bad rifle, but definately could have been better. THe Volquartsen hammer and extractor are cheap and worthwhile upgrades for it. Most of the new magazines ran just fine, and it only malfunctioned a little more than my 10/22, however it needed to be cleaned a lot more often. I haven't seen a semi-auto .22 that digests all .22 ammunition flawlessly forever however, and if you shoot enough rounds per weekend then you'll run into a malfunction eventually also.

It was a nice adult sized stock too, very comfortable. We put on a New England Custom Gun rear sight, and that helped make it a very fun gun to shoot.

Though if I could do it all over again, I'd have gone with a 10/22 for her, as well as for my first gun (my first .22 was a Winchester 9422, which is great, but the 10/22 fits my needs better).
