Remington 700 ammo

What ammo have ya'll used in a remington 700 with good or decent accuracy results? Mine is in .270 win. Im using a VX II 3-9 X 40 leupold scope with 140 gr. winchester accubond and my accuracy is not all that good at 100 yards. Im grouping like 3-4 inches all around

Different rifles like different loadings. One persons Rem700 in 30-06 may like a particular brand that shoots like crap in your .270. Even identical guns can shoot the same ammo quite differently.

That being said, Federal, Hornady, and HSM have reputations for producing consistently accurate ammunition.

Also, what sort of rest are you shooting from? 3-4 inch groups at 100 yards from a new Rem700 is probably not entirely the fault of the ammunition.

I offer it the spirit of helping not criticising.
I have a Rem 700 in .308. Look at the rifle, scope & shooter. Look at your setup such as bench. I have been to 3 places that had benches that pretty much prevent a decent group. I have found a bipod (prone) & rear bag to be the most repeatable for me. I'm not good at bench shooting. I have also had problems at several ranges with the target holders rocking in the wind.
I loaded several hundred rounds of .308 with exactly the same load. My groups continually shrank. It was all in my technique. I was the weakest link. I kept the load consistent and proved I was the variable. Another thing for me was cheek weld. Too high a set scope rings didn't help. Rifle fit is one thing I really believe in.

How are your groups looking? pics would help. Are they showing some sort of pattern - horizontally or vertically.

How good are you normally with other rifles? I sometimes get one of my buddies to shoot a rifle to see if it just me. If I shoot badly & they don't then I know I'm the issue.

You might try some different loads for sure. Try some 130 grain. Handloading opens up so much accuaracy potential.

Try some Federal 130 grain Hi Shok loads. I've shot these loads out 5 different 270 Win rifles over a few decades. They always shoot well for me. If your rifle won't shoot these than there is a problem elsewhere.

I was shooting from a bench. I had 3 sandbags at the bottom of the front barrel and 2 sandbags under my elbow. Im suspect Im the problem.

If the sandbags were truly under the barrel and not the forearm that may be the problem. Always place the forearm on the rest, never the barrel as this will cause pressure on the barrel and ruin accuracy.

If that's not the problem, then try some HSM or Federal ammo as they have always served me well.

Also, it wouldn't be a horrible idea to let another person shoot it to see if it's just you.

If all this fails...call Remington.

If the scope is tight that rifle should shoot 1 inch groups no problem. Good advice in previous posts.

Yep I'd try different ammo. On my Browning BAR I tried to shoot some Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips and the gun was shooting all over the target. Finally I tried other ammo's and found it loves Federal Fusions and really likes Federal Power Shoks both of which are cheaper anyway. Now it's still not the most accurate gun the world but changing ammo made a world of difference.

I'd try different brands in yours to see what it likes as every gun likes different ammo. I will say I normally have decent luck with Federal so that's one I'd try first.

I'd also make sure there is nothing wrong with the crown as that could affect the accuracy. Run a q tip around in on the inside to make sure there aren't any burs or anything. One other thing to do is make sure your scope mounts and rings are tight. If none of the above fix it I'd be suspect of the scope. My Leupold VX-I got to where it seemed to change POI every few shots which meant the gun was shooting huge groups. I'd check this out with yours to make sure it's not the problem if the first few things mentioned don't fix it.

Federal doesn't make GMM for the .270

However, there is a 130gr Hornady SST loading in Black Hills Gold lineup. That would be my choice for off the shelf premium ammunition.

In addition to making sure the front rest is not contacting the barrel, try to rest the buttstock on your rear sandbag. Squeeze the rear sandbag to make elevation adjustments. The general idea is to have your body contact the gun as little as possible to minimize the effects of your breathing, muscle twitching, etc. on the shot.

Don't rest the barrel itself (as already stated). Shot in positions that you are more likely to shoot in the field (if you are a hunter). You should be doing less than that. FWIW, I've shot some remingtons with gold tips (I have no clue what they were, but they sucked on deer...), winchester soft points, and currently hornady light mag loads. My 700 30.06 shot all these about the same at 100yds, with the gold tips maybe being slightly more accurate (too bad they didn't expand worth a damn).

In other words, keep shooting, let someone else try it, make sure the scope is tight, but with groups that large out of a bolt, it sounds like you maybe the problem, not the gun. If thats the case, just shoot shoot shoot until you get it down.

Federal Vital Shok BTSP's work real well for me. I've got a 700 in .270 Win and I shoot the 130 and 150 grain rounds. I've got a 7400 in 30.06 and I shoot the same Vital Shok load BTSP in 165 grains. They work excellent. I used to use Remington ammunition, but the damn Core Lokt's on two seperate occasions literally exploded inside my deer, like an internal grenade. Well needless to say it spread S_H_*_T everywhere including into the meat. A deer shot in the chest cavity would have S_H_*_T blown into the hip sockets on the back end of the animal; hell of a waste of animal.

Federal does not list GMM in .270 Win. Black Hills offers .270 Win in the Black Hills Gold line. Black Hills has always been good in .223.

Federal doesn't make Gold Medal Match ammo for the .270 Win, but they do make the Power Shok and Vital Shok ammo, which I've used very effectively for years. If you don't have to shoot beyond 200 yards, the Power Shok stuff is fine, but if you get that occasional 300+ yard shot I would recommend the Vital Shok BTSP's -- they are deadly.
