Remington 700 SPS?

I'm looking into getting one...I seen one at Dicks Sporting Goods with scope and all for $450 after $40 mail in rebate. Its a 5.56 or .223 chamber which ever you prefer...Does anyone have one or have experience with one? I've been doing my homework online and also found that they offer em in 7.62x51 and other higher calibers all in the ballpark of $500ish. And thinking about maybe getting one in that caliber. I'd love to hear from anyone that has one about their experience with one.



EDIT: 12:56...I am mainly looking for a low budget longer range rifle, not so much for hunting...although I may take it on a trip or 2.

There are several different variants, but they seem to be good shooters. Sniper Central's review. It depends on what you are wanting this rifle to do, but it will fill the squirrel/non-competitive target/low budget precision/plinker niche well. The barrel is not a sporter weight, so it doesn't fit the hunting role very well.

The Remington M700 is a lot of gun for the money.

The 700 action is outstanding and Remington knows
how to build a barrel.

I have an SPS Varmint in 243 Win that is superbly accurate.

Here's a pic of my hunting bud with his M700 SPS in 308 Win
with a nice blackbuck antelope he shot this October.

the sps at dicks is most likely the sporter weight barrel, like DR mentioned there is the varmint barrel and a tactical model with the same varmint barrel but at 20". all of them can be had for right around $500, heres my tactical for $555 or $515 after the rebate.

if your mainly looking for a benchgun with a very occasional hunt id go for the tactical in .308.
 
Awesome pics men...Especially yours Doc, that animal is a beauty! I wish I could hunt something like that around VA! So let me get this straight because I havent ever really been into hunting/precision rifles, is the heavy barrel good for a longer range or what? Because I'm looking for a longer range rifle. I've always hunted with my stepdads rifles and never really got into any question about em.

DocXRing has it right that the M700 is a lot of gun for the money. Finding a good value, such at Dick's, is a great way to get into quality rifle shooting.

You mentioned you wanted an entry-level rifle for longer range shooting. If that's true, I'd recommend the 308 over the 223. For casual shooting 223's are fine in the sub 400 yard range, while 308s are great for longer distances.

There's an economic decision also. 223s are a heck of a lot less expensive to shoot than 308s.

One also needs to be aware that you'll never go big game hunting with a 223. You can do just fine with a 308.

My advice? Get the 308. Read, Practice, Repeat.
