I have a Remington model 700 rifle that I plan on mounting a scope onto. I plan on using Burris Signature rings and have a question on which type of base to use. The three types of bases that are available are: Weaver style, Double Dovetail, and Universal Base (dovetail in front and windage screw in back). What are the pro's and con's of each one? Is one considered more strong than the others? Is one considered to hold a zero better than the others? If it helps, like I said above, I will be using Burris Signature rings because I like the fact that they do not scratch your scope once it is mounted. Thanks for any comments back.

I have a Burris scope on a Weatherby Vanguard (same bases as the 700). I used Warne QD rings and Warne Weaver-style bases.

They are excellent, and I couldn't be happier. They went on dead straight, the scope was already bore-sighted when I put it on, and the QD rings go on and off without losing zero.

I don't know if Remington's receivers are made to spec as well as the Howa action on my Weatherby was, but assuming that they are machined straight, good rings should go on straight, too, i.e. no scratches.

Yup. What AB said. I have rail bases on allllll my centerfire rifles. I will never use traditional Leupolds (or other) bases and rings again. Note too that if you mount a rail base, most of the manufacturers recommend that you use Lock Tite in the screws and epoxy between the base and receiver. They hold real tight!

I had Dual Dovetails on a rifle and really liked them for solidness. I hated them for travel with my rifles. I prefer to remove the scope while en route just to reduce damage potential. They need to be nice and precise to get a return to zero. Couldn't do that with DD-rings/bases.

The windage type, I hated. Really hated. Still do. I have a set of Leupold windage-type bases and rings in my safe room that I used 1 day on my Weatherby Vanguard. They will work on your Remington 700. I'll never use them again because I just don't like the design. Sure, they work great. But I don't like them.
