Hi Guys,
I'm wanting a "Jeff Cooper" Scout rifle( Short action, less than 7 lbs, 1 meter long, scout scope with fixed ghost ring sights)
Well, now I'm thinking about a Remington Model 7 Synthetic youth in 7mm-08. Out of the box it is 6.5 lbs, 38" long and has fixed sights. Walmart has them for around $400.00 All it would take is a Ashley scout mount& ghost ring sights and I have a scout. Could it be that easy?
Mabe too; polish the bolt rails, trigger job and glass bedding w/ free floaded barrel after the scout mount gets put on.

I'm wondering about the factory stock.
Are they injection molded & hollow like the ramlines OR are they solid like the McMillian/bell and carlson?

It would most likely get a cammo job either hand done or a pro job.

Does anyone out there have one and can shed some light on the quality of the stocks?
Thanks

Cajun
Merry Christmas

I would assume they have same stock that is on my 700 synthetic. Better than ramline, by a bunch, but not as solid as an HS precission or bell & carlson.

I glass bedded the action and the barrel is free floating except for two minor contact points at the tip of the fore end (factory design).

I get about 3/4 inch group for the first 4-5 rounds @ 100 then it opens up a bit until the barrel cools back down (mine is a 300 WM so rapid shooting really isnt feasable anyway). Not too mention that sporter wieght barrels aren't generally tack drivers, at least not for long bech sessions.

I like the stock, solid yet light and tough enough I dont worry about damaging it while hunting on the ATV, foot or prone.

I had a 700 with the plastic stock. It was light and seemed to do it's job. I had a 300WM that would group moa all day long if I did my part. When I pulled off the factory pad to replace it with an R3, I saw how the hollow buttstock. I filled the stock with that expanding foam (the slow-expanding type for windows!) and it made the hollow sound and cheap feel go away. I'd reccomend this trick if you get the Remmy, it doesn't add any appreciable weight at all.
