I need to replace the magazine latch on an old Mod. 760 gamemaster (270 Win.).

The latch on mine shows a 5. I see at Numrich there is one listed, old style, size 2. At classic firearms, I see a size 5.

How compatible are the sizes for the latches?

I've read that I could use the new style latch for a Model 7400 as well. They have one in size 3. If I buy the new style, I assume I would need to get the latch spring as well. Would this work?

Thanks

They aren't one size fits all. The Remington 760 game master was offered in a wide variety of cartridges from the 222 remington all the way up to 35 whelen. The number associated with the part on your rifle belongs with the long action family of cartridges. I advise you to find out the year of manufacture for your rifle to be sure since the .270 was offered for the entire length of that models production run 1952 to 1981. That will determine which style you need to buy.

The date stamp year on the barrel is CB, which I think is March(?)1955.

The magazine latch, as posted above, has a 5 stamped on it. It’s possible the latch is not original, but I don’t remember my father ever having it repaired.

How does this correlate to compatible latches? Thanks.

It correlates to interchangeable parts between the different models. What may work for 30-06 wont work for .222 Remington it apples and oranges.

If we were talking about Winchester model 70's some parts are not interchangeable for models made prior to 1964 with those made after 1964.

With your rifle Remington did the same thing just like other manufactures have done and still do to this day. I just don't know what year the changes were made.

Good luck and stick around someone will chime in that does know.

What is wrong with the existing latch? I have a 760 in 30-06, and sometimes it does not want to release I have to monkey with it a bunch, and it is hard to get it to really latch, you have to check it and really make sure it clicks in and is latched. I don't use it much, but figured I could probably smooth off the hole for the latch on the mag with a stone a bit, or smooth over the latch, but never bothered. Did the latch break?

Did the latch break?

Yep, the latch broke:(. I’ve done some Googling and it isn’t clear what the numbers mean. Some say a different number will work but might need adjustment.
