Hi everyone

I have a Remington Model 81 in okay condition, in 300 Savage. It seems to function properly, except for the magazine. When you compress the magazine spring by adding rounds to the magazine the spring does not push back against the round in the magazine, and they are therefore not picked up by the bolt. My guess is that the Magazine spring is bad and needs replaced, however I have had difficulty locating a replacement Magazine spring for it. Is there any way to fix the old spring so it works, or to make my own spring?

Did you give the mag a good cleaning? The follower may be binding. For decades WD-40 was the wonder lube that wasn't. Just spray it on and your done. Problem is the stuff eventually turns to a vanish gumming up all kinds of stuff. If you haven't cleaned it give it a good soak in a solvent and see if it helps. I don't see why the spring would go bad unless you left the mag loaded for years. Good luck.

OH YA, WELCOME!

Thanks a bunch fellers! I'll try the soaking and see, and if that doesn't work, I'll give ahlmans a call.

I have had the same rifle. Watch a video on how to properly disassemble it and you can get the magazine right out of it for cleaning. There are screws you DO NOT want to remove. This is a good place to start:

I know it's been a while since this thread was active, but just wanted to post a follow up to my issue. It was indeed the magazine spring. I ordered a new one from Wiseners, and once I got it in place, it has been ejecting rounds with authority. Haven't had a chance to take it to the range quite yet.

Thanks Enfielder for the video. That is actually the one I used to take mine down, multiple times.
