Is it possible to remove the dents from a wooden stock using the dishwasher or iron method, WITHOUT first stripping off the wood finish?

The way to remove dents from wood is with steam. Steam is probably going to wreck a varnished finish. Is the stock varnished or just oiled?

I have done both ways, and they both work, but the finish will feel a bit funny, with the wet rag , and steam method, right were you are putting the rag.
