I have a ruger Blackhawk chamber that was recut for 38 super from a 9mm it is to deep with the cases setting to far from firing pin. What is best way to fix.Can a insert be put in . Or best to rechamber for something else.Any good ideas.thanks

I'm assuming that this is a convertible with two cylinders? How much too deep? Assuming not much, the only rimless cartridge of similar proportions that would clean up that cut is the 9mm WinMag and it's a lot higher pressure round that the 38 Super (45,000 vs 36,500). Brass is about as difficult to find as factory loaded ammo.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9mm_Winchester_Magnum There might be a larger diameter cased round that would work. The 357 SIG is a possibility only because the bottlenecked case might allow the round to headspace properly. Operative word - might. By design it is supposed to headspace on the case mouth although there is some disagreement on that point. Your existing cut already has the mouth too far forward to work that way. Yours would have to use the relatively small shoulder to set headspace and that might prove to be unsatisfactory.
Unfortunately, it looks like a new cylinder in in your future.

The .38 Super is a semi-rimmed case. That means that the rims stick out over the
head. (bigger than the head diameter) The rounds should headspace on the rim.
Have you tried putting a round or two into the cylinder?

Zeke

Yes I have loaded them all they all set flush with chamber. The 9mm luger sets out some

38 Super never head spaced correctly off the rim even though that was the original intent. All modern barrels headspace off the case mouth. 9mm Luger is a tapered case, nominally larger at the base than a 38 Super by .007"

Well I can slide the 9mm largo in it backwards rim first till it sets on the cut .So not only is it to deep but diameter is to big as well..Looks like I may try to have it converted to the 356 GNR

Why not cut back a 223 case till you get the right headspace. 223/5.56 brass is always on the ground at the range, or is very cheap. Yes it becomes a custom chambering
you will have to load for, but it beats buying a new cylinder for the gun.

The 9mm Win Mag base diameter is the same as a 9mm Luger, so the cylinder should clean up if the only problem was going too deep. Is the cylinder diameter large enough to accommodate the 41 Mag/356 GNR case safely? I don't know and would be finding out before jumping off. Does anyone chamber for that beside Reeder?

Also a good workable option.

Yes from what I understand Reeder uses the cylinder you send him be it 9mm or 357. And I will look for a case for 223 to see how it fits thanks.

There are 3 types of .38 Super Brass. The .38 ACP, .38 Super Plus P and the later .38 Super Comp. The Super Comp is rimless with a heavy web. This round can stand heavy loads in the non fully-supported 1911 chambers. I run .357 Mag level pressures with the 140 grs. bullets in the new Colt 1911 Government. The new Colts can chamber and extract the rimless case without modifications.

Well it is shootable the 38 S& W fit in it just right. Good for now hate having a unshootable gun. And 223 case was to loose to try anything with it wildcat like.

Isn't the .38 S&W rim too big for the extractor to snap over it? The .38 ACP/.38 Super (same case) normally seats on the rim even in modern guns; not on the case mouth.

Jim, the major manufacturers have changed over to the 38 Super Nonte style reamers for the modern pistols. That rim is just too small and headspace is pretty iffy unless the chamber dimensions are kept really tight.

I don't think that's a big problem in most revolvers
