Revolver Strut

    I have an old Colt New Army revolver with the typical cylinder lock-up problem. I took it to "gunsmith" who had it for nine months and then said parts were too hard to find.

    Anyway, the parts needed were a "strut" and "strut spring".

    What is a strut and what does it do? If I'm able to find one, is this something I can replace with average or better mechanical skills?

    It is called the DA sear in a S&W.

    Whether you can find, or succesfully fit them is another story.

    And I doubt the strut & spring has anything to do with your cylinder lock up problem anyway if the DA works.

    Sounds more likely to be a hand, or bolt stop and/or spring to me.

    Thanks for the info. You mentioned a bolt stop. I couldn't find that in the schematic. Can you please give me the number of it?

    It's called the "Cylinder stop", part 31 and it's spring part 32.

    Let me put it this way: In the US there are probably no more then 5 or so pistolsmiths who will even consider working on one of these.
    All internal action parts were individually hand fitted. Since they were fitted to a different gun, the used parts are usually too small to be fitted to another gun.

    These old New Army & Navy revolvers are notoriously complicated designs and extremely difficult to work on even if usable parts can be found.
