Police give out heat vouchers for guns
    December 22,2005
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - Pawtucket police wanted to get guns off the street -- so they offered free heat to people packing heat.

They handed out 50 dollar heating vouchers to anyone who willing to surrender their gun.

Residents turned in 46 weapons during the exchange yesterday, including an M-16 rifle.

Police also collected thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Representative Peter Kilmartin -- who's also a Pawtucket police captain -- says energy costs are skyrocketing, and officials were looking for an innovative way to help people.

National Grid, New England Gas and McKee Brothers Oil contributed heating vouchers.

If they ever have one of these things in Louisiana - unlikely - I'm going with cash.

And I also might round up every worthless POS gun for miles around to intentionally mock the crap out of the thing, while bringing the medias attention to it...

I doubt that fifty dollars would buy a weeks worth of heat, I would freeze before handing in a m16

Errr... no, Chawbaccer, you'd be saying "This is an M16! FREEZE!"

I'd imagine it (the AR15, I'm not calling it an M16) was one of three things:

    1)Fake
    2)Stolen
    3)Staged for the media.

when your hands get cold, pop off some shots and just remove the handguards off the m16 and theres a nice warm barrel to utilize, no need to lose your weapon and no need to spend 50 dollars of the taxpayers (your own) money :D

I'm sure most of the guns that end up in buyback programs are POS.

I remember one of these "buy back" programs a few years ago where the cops were paying $50 cash for any gun. Every dealer, collector, and farmer around unloaded all their rusty, worthless junk.

I wish someone would show the guy who turned in the M16 (assuming such a thing really happened) the one on gunsamerica right now for $13,750.00. Merry Christmas, stupid. How long could you have heated your house with the other $13,700?

They do that here all the time but they usually pay $50 per gun or give out sneakers LOL. I sure do hope no one was actually stupid enough to turn in an m-16 for a heating voucher. I pray that if it did happened it was just a RRA AR or something. I could understand if the gun was "dirty" or something but man there must be some cop in Pawtucket laughing all the way to his safe. :p It would be sad if it was someone who had the gun and didnt know what type of money they were sitting on. Like an old widow who was getting rid of some of her husbands things. :what:

May not do you any good. Down here a while back the cops did one of these buybacks and a guy set up on the corner across the street with a sign saying "I BUY GUNS." The cops ordered him to leave and when he protested they arrested him for tresspassing even though the property owner had given him permission to be there. The case was dropped, but of course the cops had stopped him from buying any guns, which is all they were after.

I tried to get the police to let someone with some expertise look at the guns they'd taken in to make sure there was nothing of historical value there that should be in a museum but they refused. One officer told me they'd taken in several "German war souveniers and some old Army rifles." One can only guess at what else went into the furnaces at Florida Steel Corp.

If they had common sense they'd be ashamed of themselves. Typical politician crap.

When they start giving out $50 vouchers for a box of .22 I will see the Brady Bunch light and start forking over brick upon brick to get that horrible stuff off of the street and that other horrible stuff into my home heating tanks.

Were gonna need those heating vouchers to get our alloted monthly energy allowance once we experience the glory of the SDUS- Socialist Dictatorshiip of the United States.

Well, maybe thats a stretch, but i think it gives my feelings pretty well.

I was talking with a guy that hung out and bought guns in Michigan at a buyback. Ended up with some nice stuff. If they do it again, I'll be there with cash myself for the better guns......

If that had been me and I in fact had the owners permission, there would have been a lawsuit for false arrest. I figure I could afford about any thing I wanted after settlement from the PD's insurance company's nickel.
