So I have been researching 1-4x scopes.

it seems to me these type of scopes are a jack of all trades, but a master of none.
they give you the benefit of a 1x red dot sight, as well as a basic magnification to bring targets in a little closer.

My question is that I keep seeing this,

A 1-4x, w/ a little reflex sight on top?

is that not a little redundant? or is just tacticool, but not practical?

help me understand why?

I have to agree. That makes no sense to me other than i suppose fast transition to non-magnified when you are dialed up. Except then why not just have a 4X fixed scope? Is it really of any advantage to have 2X and 3X as well? I don't think so.

it is redundant and pretty much just looks tacticool for bubba out in the woods but it would be nice to be able to set the scope on 4x and just use the reflex on top for up close and personal desquirreling operations but you would probably also have issues with cheek weld....I would say it's 80% looks and 20% usefulness.

LOL what about in 3gun comps? I could see its use there where time is a legit concern between hits.

BUT

I was just poking through the rules, and I think it said that in 3gun comps, one cannot use any sort of optic w/ magnification?

honestly, i don't know why someone would put a mini red dot on a 1-4x. however, the mini red dot and a 2-10x is a great combo

I don't like the mini dot on top of the scope... it puts you on a chin weld. A better setup is the offset mounts you see where the dot is off at 45 degrees on the side of the rifle, so the shooter cants the rifle to use it. It is nice because it is quicker to cant the rifle a little than it is to rotate a power ring on a scope, or to pull off an optic and flip up your rear iron sight.

If you were a squad designated marksman, it could make some sense, given that on any given day you might be kicking doors all day (you want cheekweld, but you don't want magnification, so you drop the 1-4x down to 1x and ignore the RDS) or doing precision work (need the 4x, what if you have an unexpected close-in shot, the scope could be adjusted to zero at 600 yards and on 4 magnification, no time to rotate down to 1x, use the RDS!). But the illustrated scope and RDS are certainly not issued over in sandbox, and you're right. If you want an RDS with your glass, put the RDS in a 45-degree mount from LaRue (run an Aimpoint T1) and then use an ACOG (LaRue mount). Turn the gun over 45 degrees for close-in work, use the 4x, 5.5x or 6x ACOG at range. It's a waste to have a 1-4x variable and an RDS.
Also, why is your DMR guy using that DMR in room clearing, and why can't he be the last one through the door, cleanup, or covering your back while you're kicking doors? Not that most civvies are kicking doors every day, but...

I use 2 x7 scope... that is jack of all trades to me... with long eye relief... 2x for close stuff @ 3-gun 7x for long range... yes you can use optics @ 3-gun as there are long range stages 150+ yard shots.... good luck doing that with irons... some of the top 3-gun competitions have 500+ yard stages...

The run and gun guys use them. If you play that game, they are very beneficial for quick target acquisition when you are in strange positions.
