I am looking for examples of self defense shootings where the attacker was stopped with a rifle. Examples involving an auto-loading rifle (of any variety) would be useful.

While I do find them interesting, examples of defense against large animals, military encounters and police encounters are not what I am looking for.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't have any specific examples, but I could see a SBR being used in an HD scenario.

Yup, and I'm sure that they have. Just looking for incidents.

Think she could have said "assault rifle" a few more times?

Their was that guy that worked for HK that defended himself and his girlfriend with a Ruger AC 556. I think there was a thread here on THR about it.

NRA magazines have 'the armed citizen' and I have seen long arms mentioned a number of times. Someplace they have an archive of those you could sort through.

Simple odds would suggest that a significant number of any such non-LEO defensive shootings would have been done by a good ol' .22--probably a 10/22.

I've seen news reports of several in the last 2-3 years but didn't save them. Quite a few AR's, at least one was a homeowner with an AK in Florida. Not all involved shots fired or resulted in injury to the home invader, and I do not believe they were treated any differently than if a shotgun or pistol had been in the homeowner's hands.

That Fadden article was very enlightening, thanks for posting it.

There was a case in VA a few years back where a man used an SKS for HD. He got away without charges or convictions. For the most part, type of gun is not an issue, except for MG's.

Thanks Bubbles, that was the one. That makes for a good read every now and again.

The big concern is whether you will be "painted" as some kind of gun nut, crazy person with an assault rifle, overgunned, bloodthirsty, etc, by a prosecutor, or plaintiff's attorney in a civil suit after using a long gun in a defensive shooting. My defense, should I ever need one, would be to call in several law enforcement people, trainers, tactical officers, etc, to state that they would PREFER to have a "superior" weapon in a hostile situation, and that it would be reasonably prudent to use one if it were available. Any professional and knowledgeable soldier or police officer knows that employing a superior weapon can enhance your chances of survival in a gunfight or self defense situation. If I have a rifle at hand, I will use it if I think it will give me an edge in my defense.

Everyone should ask themselves, "can I articulate my actions in a court of law as justifiable?". Don't carry or use something if you can't articulate why you selected that hardware, or do something if you can't articulate your thought process.

The Fadden article is very interesting. Fortunately the judge in this case exercized good sense:

"The prosecutor made such a show of waving the machine gun that the judge made a point of instructing the jury that the death weapon had nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not the shooting was self-defense" Emphasis mine

Anyone that finds themselves in any defensive shooting where the prosecution tries to make something out of what type of gun or ammo was used should make sure, insist, that their defense attorney lay this issue to rest.

IIRC, a year or so ago, a young man used an AK-47 clone against some home invaders intending to rape and probably murder some partygoers near Atlanta. I have some add'l info in my archive -- will try to dig it up and post it for you.

Unfortunately, the state in which Fadden was tried didn't have a policy of financial reimbursement for unmeritorious prosecution. He got half his legal fees paid for by HK and still owed $45k. I'm glad the state of Washington has RCW 9A.16.110 to reimburse legal fees and lost time for unmeritorious prosecution! I'm not sure how common this is, but that article is dated 1984 so perhaps it's a rather common statue today.

Is there any way to estimate about how many times a home/shop owner felt the need to Display, or Use a rifle in the aftermath of a hurricane or other natural disaster in the US?

Yes, that would be a good place to look. In fact, I would be willing to bet that long guns were used about 13% of the time. However, I don't know how many were shotgun versus how many were rifle.

    Okay, I cheated...
