• Possible Downtime Alert

I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

I was just looking at the Winchester 2012 catalog (not to pick on them specifically), and I noticed a lot of the chamberings in their line-up are quite powerful. It's like Magnums and WSM's are now the norm. There are few calibers between .243 and .308 these days.

Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but when did this happen? Isn't it still a true statement that a .30-06 or .308 can still take anything down in North America except the big bears? Yah, I know magnums have their place, and I don't mind their existence, but a couple extra options between .22 and .308 would be nice (like a 6.5x55!).

I have no answer, but I definitely agree with you. I had that issue when looking for a Browning A-Bolt a few weeks ago. Had to "settle" for a composite stalker in 30-06 (which I really like now) but all the nicer walnut/blued rifles were WSM's. I guess a lot of people like flat trajectories and $40/box ammo.

Credit gun magazines (which NOBODY admits to reading)and good marketing. I appreciate a multitude of choices but, realistically, you are no better served with a high dollar ubber magnum than you are with the 100+ year old 30.06 cartridge especially with todays "premium" bullets.

i enjoy my 280 and believe you can kill anything in northamerica with it but a few years back i got a browning 325 short mag titanium for lighter weight and in case i am face to face with a grizzly or brown bear which can happennot only in alaska but a number of western states. with that said a 44 mag on side would have the same effect.

I wasn't comparing the 30.06 to the .375H&H(I want one of those too but can't justify the expense). I was comparing it to the wunderkindubberblasters. What ever reason anyone wants to use to buy the latest and greatest and pay much more for it is fine with me. Just don't try to tell me they will do the job any better.

Depends on what you want to do and at what range. For most people a .308 or .30-06 will be just fine for anything at a range that they're capable of hitting at. The mags and short mags stretch the lethal range a bit farther for those that want it. At .308 ranges the .30-06 offers nothing but more recoil. Same with the .300 Win Mag or WSM at .30-06 range.

Reality is that most people use way more gun than they really need. If you use 1k FPE as the benchmark (that number doesn't tell you everything) even the lowly .243 can deliver that with a hunting bullet out to 400yds.

i live in an area that has always been shotgun or pistol only but this year the state changed the law to allow rifle hunting in our county so a ton of rifles have been sold.the local gun shop guy tells me that he cant keep enough 300wsms on the racks.he has all kinds of 243,270,7mm-08,30-30,308,30-06 and stuff that just doesnt move.in this area 140 to 180lb bucks are the norm and black bear are legal to hunt but are few and far between.lots of small farm land and scattered timber rolling hills it is hard to find a shot over 200 yards. doesnt make sense that people have to have 300s when they have made due with slug guns up until now.

Looking at Winchesters website they offer 22-250, 243, 7-08, 308, 25-06, 30-06, and 270 in non magnum chamberings. Magnum chamberings include 7mm Rem mag 7mm WSM, 264 WM, 300 WSM, 300 Win mag., 338 Win mag. and 325 WSM.

What more do you want or need in non magnum chamberings? If anything they have left out a lot of very usable magnum chamberings. Nothing is larger than 338.

Remember this rifle has only been on the market for 3 years and still not up to full production. They are actually showing many chamberings, magnum and non magnum that are still almost impossble to find. They are so busy building rifles in 270, 30-06 and 308, that most of the other chamberings are almost impossible to actually buy. As they catch up with production I'm sure they will offer more versatility in their cahmberings.

The only magnum chambering I've actually seen is the 300 WSM

I disagree. The 50BMG is a caliber with a specific purpose, which has absolutely nothing to do with hunting animals. I can't even credit the mag and short mag craze to gun rags. In fact, I've read many more articles denouncing magnum calibers, and praising classics like .257 Roberts than vice-versa.

I credit the mag and short mag craze to people in general. All too often, we associate bigger/faster/stronger with better, when in fact, it may be much more appropriate to think of it as unnecessary.

Logic has been completely abandoned by most people, and it's becoming evident in more aspects of life every day.

I have seen the opposite in the mags that I read. Finding an article that ISN'T about a short magnum or similar is very hard to do (unless it's a handloading article). I don't have anything against the short magnums or even magnums in general (I now own or have owned) multiple guns 7mm.rem.mag.,.300 win. mag. and .300 wby.mag. Still have a couple. They stay in the gun safe. My 30.06s,.308 and 7x57mms see all the action. Even my Marlin 1895 45.70 guide gun doesn't get used. Just TOO much gun.

Two people can read the same magazine and come away with opposite views. Folks tend to see things the way they already have their mind made up it is supposed to be.

These guys have all read, and seen on tv, the former military snipers taking game at uber long distance, and then see what they are shooting, and think that bigger boom makes up the difference of practice, practice, and more practice. When they find out that no amount of gunpowder makes up for trigger time there will be a lot of guns for sale. Also bragging rights count, don't you know. ha ha Some people think that just because you spent $10/ round it gives you more of them.

It's all beer & buddy talk doing the sales. Hanging of the tailgate of the local field truck is "the buck" with a decent rack. And that old boy got it with his MAG something, so now the race is on. Who can bag a bigger buck with a bigger rifle

It'll get spread around that "XYZ did great hunting this year with his new Mag whatever" then the rest want to play. Never mind that XYZ has been watching that animal out of the corner of his eye all summer and fall, and it was a first day kill. The other guys gotta buy something for deer camp discussion. Besides, there was an empty spot in the safe :D
