Rifles you adore that leave others scratching their head?

At the range I am known as "That guy who shoots all those old guns" which I don't mind at all. No matter what I bring they all call them Mausers. But I really enjoy shooting this TC Dimension in .223. Goofy looking and an acquired taste for sure but it fits me well. Unfortunately they were discontinued before I could get a 7mm-08 barrel.

Just Right carbine

It has funky bolt, no LRBHO, weird mag release and flathead "screws" for receiver but can quickly convert to 9mm/40S&W/45ACP with modular Glock/M&P/1911 mag wells. 1:16 barrel twist rate has produced smaller groups than 1:10 PCC barrels and is "packable" using Take Down Tube.
I don't have a list of guns I want anymore but if I did a JRC in 45acp would be on top of it.

Single shot rifles of any sort but especially handi rifles. Specifically the ones I really get excited about are the New England Firearms branded ones for reasons unknown. This one has a 444 marlin barrel and also a 35 rem barrel to go with it.

Wow! I don't think I'd enjoy shooting the .444 Marlin out of that light rifle with a relative "splinter" of a stock.

The Marlin tube fed levermatics, especially the 57M (.22 Mag), even though the 57 (.22) is identical.
Something about the snik-snik of that short throw lever.

I had one of those! I loved it, but economic hardship forced me to sell it. Sweet little (actually not little at all) rifles and you're right about that short throw lever. One could work it without one's thumb ever moving off of the stock.

As for my entry I'll go with the Ross M-10 in .280 Ross. The original 7mm Magnum and the first cartridge to exceed 3000 FPS. I'd post a pic but the Geek Squad is replacing the battery in my phone. Maybe this afternoon.

Rossi 92 357 with rail, red dot, and flashlight ziptied under the mag tube with remote tail cap and ;pressure switch. Wood is terrible, even for brazilian rubberwood, two toned like someone spilt something on it. But it digests every length of 38 and 357 and shoots very well.

it has a pretty effective recoil pad on it but yes it kicks like a mule. I have it loaded a tiny bit hotter than marlin loads since the handi rifle can handle much higher pressure. Need a scope with plenty of eye relief.

  • SOCOM-16 platform (you’re giving up too much velocity! You can’t easily suppress it!)
  • Archangel CQB stock
  • Ultimak M8 rail
  • EOTech mounted up front on a riser to see over the
  • DBAL illuminator
  • Surefire light, and a Surefire switch that drives both the illuminator and the light
I love it. It’s what I’ve wanted since i started looking for semiauto 308s.

I love it in spite of its flaws.

I'm right there with you. The M14 traditionalists seem to tolerate the Scout, but nose up to the Socom variants. Mine is basically stock, I even took the forward rail off mine because I don't plan to mount an optic, and the rail was just turning into a giant heatsink otherwise, but is such a complete package... I love mine. It doesn't feel nearly as big as an AR-10, for some reason, and I don't really care about the lost velocity over a longer barrel... I'm not lining up at Camp Perry with it.

Hmm, adore.....and others scratching their head.....To me this means I really like it but most people see it as totally pointless.

Any remington 8, 99% of the calibers are just not made anymore, and the 1%, 35 Rem, is dead enough to call on life support. The guns themselves are crazy complex, and the more "modern" cartridge 300 Savage, is just IMHO too much for the gun.

Not a rifle, but many people have no idea why I like Auto 5's. The stupid screws only go on one side, and have that silly screw that keeps the other screw from coming out.....where is as a modern shotgun will not hit you as hard....long recoil is a beiotch.....and you can take down a modern shotgun with no tools.....and it is cheaper to boot....why do you like those antiques.....because of everything I just stated.

Not a tack-driver, but a very good hunting rifle for moderate ranges...for sure! I once had a .22LR semi-auto Savage rifle that killed lots of varmints/small game, dump rats and tin cans. It seemed to be a really deadly hunting rifle, until shooting it once at a target at 50 yards. It was all-over the paper! I could scarcely believe how badly it shot and got rid of it that day!!! Yeah, a bit hasty for an old friend, and the very-accurate rifle that replaced it never killed as many critters, but that was probably due more to my maturing in my sport than the rifle's fault.

All kinds of envious over the Whelen. I have a fairly expensive custom Whelen that the gunsmith screwed up on. it won't go bang. and of course, he retired while I was deployed overseas, and before I had a chance to shoot it.

The DeLisle carbine was the first one that came to mind for me. :)
I’ve mine. But she is to expensive to shoot a lot. Irreplaceable too, nobody makes them anymore. So it it now the only safe Queen I own. Shoot a few mags a year through her.

I am building a new one. But on a Mauser action. Waiting on tax stamps as of now.

One more 35 Whelen. Rem 700 CDL. Brand New. Unfired. I fitted her with Leupoled quick release scope mounts. Next she is being fitted with a 3 position safety and some iron sights from New England Custom guns. Last will be Sunny Hill bottom metal and a new high figure stock.

the scope is crap. Some eBay find. Prob end up with a Leupoled 1-4 or Swarovski 1-8. Something proper.

Never sell one that shoots that good.

There is iron in these words.

Which makes me cautious about buying a used gun from someone I don’t know. It’s being sold for a reason…

To respond to the OP question; my rifles are not controversial. A Ruger #1 that provides venison annually, a Ruger 10/22 that pokes holes in paper but not game animals, a Remington 03-A3 from 1943, a JC Higgins (Marlin) Model 60 .22 LR. The last two are heirlooms, safe queens. Wish I could be more interesting.

I'm not understanding the part about other people left dumbfounded by these choices. Who sees a classic sporter mauser rifle and feels confused why anyone might like it? :what:

Yup that is what I am thinking.

I took the question as being something you just love that others can't figure out why. In my example of the auto 5 I gave the reasons the people I know think I am nutz for liking them.
