Well, happy and sad at the same time. Happy that my several-year-new-to-me-unfired Mossberg 151M worked splendidly-no issues of any kind. A bit sad though, that I didn't get better accuracy out of it. As you can see, it is probably a 2-3MOA rifle at best. I did have coffee this morning, though. I've already taken the scope (Nikon 3-9x40) off and installed it on my old Stevens bolt gun. In my younger days, that did quite well at 100 yards. If my old eyes are ready, along with my shaky caffeine-laced hands, my bolt gun should do a bit better. It was so much fun I have to try. Either way, whichever I judge to be the best recipient gets the Nikon. The old Valor has been temporarily installed on the Mossberg. I never tried any match-type ammo, either, every shot was CCI Mini-Mags. I'll do the same with the Stevens. Third target should be a 25 for 86 total, but that doesn't help much. Hoping for better with the bolt. Wish me luck. But, I'll be grinning, either way.

Played around a little with my Sako this afternoon and finally shot a perfect 120. I usually shoot 5 shot groups and have my scope adjusted so the groups are NOT hitting dead center. I do this so I don't destroy my aiming point. So the first order of business was to adjust the scope to point of aim. No big deal, but it did take a few shots. I also found it somewhat challenging to be consistant enough to shoot four perfect targets consecutively. Anyway, mission accomplished:

jJsMhn8.jpg

The rifle used was an early Sako Finnfire with a Jewell 2 ounce trigger and a Lilja heavy barrel. Scope is a Leupold 6.5 x 20. The stock is factory and not bedded. Something I put together for fun after I retired. The ammo used was Lapua Center-X.

KTG0yrN.jpg

I have a couple of other accurate sporter rifles I may try this with soon, but it is hard for me to outshoot my Finnfire.

Ok, here are 4 targets from four different rifles... vostok cm2, bsa international mkII, h&r m12, Finnish lion 22lr... I used the same ammo for all four, but only 2 of them actually shoot it well... the Finnish lion prefers lapua biathlon as well as the h&r m12. There are some pulled shots and they are totally my fault and not the rifles. Also, a picture of my setup with target mounds @ 50&100yds

Was a no go for me this evening as storms rolled in when I got home from work.

I did get everything ready and even hung a Target in hopes I might at least get off some practice before the weather but to no avail. I did get to at least sight the target with my Marlin 81 with peep and .50 aperture and it looks pretty ridiculous as far as trying to get any accuracy.

I will try though as soon as I get time, as well as my $99 Walmart Savage with crap scope.

They're calling for evening storms most of this week where I'm at so I'll post laughable results when I get to it.

Happy with the results, but not the rifle, I switched back to a Vortex cross fire II. I just took the mount off of the AR and put it on the Mark II. It looks a little goofy, but was not that terrible to use. After investigating the Konus I discovered the eye piece to be loose. Not much of a problem when tightened all the way in. Of course, that is too much to focus well. Oh, well. It would be fine for my Bushmaster.

After a zeroing I ran out of Aguila Rifle Match and switched to CCI Standard Velocity. Wow. Much nicer groups. For twenty shots. After six on the target it failed to extract the casing. Every time. They shot very well, so long as I picked them out with a finger nail or spent case. I don't think it is dirty but a cleaning is in order anyway. I started at the top right and went clockwise. I seemed to lose concentration...

I would have tried some Federal Gold Medal Target, but I had some one getting impatient...

Gratuitous Proud Father Picture!

At fifty two feet he is a crack shot! I am so happy!

Cute kid. Looks like 110

Neat old rifle. I don't think that's bad at all for what it is. I count 84

Here's my shooting. Status:
-bolt action WesternField (Mossberg 340k)
-noname scope
-Remington bulk copper plated hp
-sandbag under front

I guestimate a 96?

I count 97 some of them are really close.

120, 120, 119, and 117?

Made it out today. Rifle is a H&R Model 12, BSA 6-24 on a scope block no drill mount. Ammo was Eley Club. I decided to shoot prone, one target from a bipod, another with a sling and shooting coat. I forgot my rear bag for the bipod string, but found a yoga block in the car. Better than nothing. The setup:

ford8n, thanks for thinking of this. I've been wanting to shoot that rifle with the hope of maybe trying out some smallbore prone matches and this got me out to do it. That is a very challenging target! I compared it to the 50 yd smallbore target and the 10 ring of the smallbore target is slightly larger than the 9 ring of the one we are using.

I might give it another try next week.

Here are mine for today
Looks like I'm gonna have to go buy a brick of that Hunter Match ammo, both my guns liked it best.

Shot 4 different bullet options from the rifle. The HM shot better than Fed GMM, Aguila standards, and cci minimags.... unfortunately I only bought one box of the stuff.

Shot it for both guns after zeroing with fed GMM and refining with a few rounds of HM.

The rifle is a Mossberg 802 heavy barrel, in a Boyd's 817 stock, with some trigger work (bout 5lbs). It's got a Nikon 4.5-14x40sf on it.

The pistol is a older Browning Buckmark 9 7/8 heavy barrel, custom grips, with a 4x32 Simmons pro hunter scope. I also screwed a arisaka scope mount under the barrel so I could attach my bipod.

Both guns we're shot off a knock off Atlas Bipod at the front, and a couple rice filled socks at the rear.
I would have preferred to shoot prone, but it just rained and I really didn't want to get all soaked.

Shot these round robbin, just to see how that works, and honestly I can say I much prefer it to shooting three or more shots at the same target. It makes it much easier to transition and focus on delivering a good shot without subconsciously trying to shoot a group.

Anyway, I'm quite happy with how the guns and i shot. While not overly impressive (ignore the one hole, pure luck....or I completely missed the target board, which wouldn't be horribly surprising) that's about as well as i can expect to do for the most part.

For those wanting to try iron sights I think it would help to put a white sheet of paper on the right and left side of the target. It’s very difficult to discern the target from the edge of the paper.

What size aperatures were you using for8nr? I forgot I have a smaller aperature in my lever gun I could have used. I was using the one that came with it which is a .093”

I call shenanigans! That upper left group on the first target is obviously one 30 caliber hole! You snuck your sks in there!

Lol, you know I seriously considered trying the sks on these targets, I'm still trying to find something that I can see/shoot consistently with peep sights.....if you guys are having that much issue with these targets and peeps tho, it's gonna be a no go for me.

The best part about this "competition" is that we're getting out and shooting rifles that have probably been in the safe longer than they deserve. I had a great time yesterday with three rifles. My venerable 10-22, my son's Marlin 880 SQ, which I hadn't shot for score or groups, and my very capable Rem 581 were all fun to shoot. The cheap and worn Hoppe's rest and bags that don't fit sporters well were a challenge. I found that it helped to hold the rifles down on the front bag with my left hand and pull the butt back into my shoulder firmly. Couldn't completely stop the tremors of a 74 year-old body, but had fun anyway.

What size aperatures were you using for8nr?

I don't think the rears were the problem.
The rears were .050, the fronts were what ever i had set up to shoot std 50' A36 targets at 25 yds. WAY TOO SMALL for these targets at 50 yds.
The bigger sheet of white paper behind the target might be a good idea.

Nice and sunny this morning.
Gonna grab a couple scoped guns and shoot some scores. Might grab and iron sighter and see how it shoots in better light.

Going forward I don't think I'll try to update the leader board. The heart of this challenge was to see how well you and your chosen gun shot, not how well you shot against others. Hense why I posted my 45 with my Win 75 - bad sight choice.

And the target pics / scores from today.
All the guns were clean and only fouled with two shots.

20180523_133600.jpg
Kimber 82G, my indoor 4 position rifle. First target 111, 1/2 way through poi decided to shift into the 8 ring low. In a stubborn move I fired one more shot at the 4th bull before doing a scope adjustment. Second target with the fouling settling in was a 117.

20180523_133622.jpg
Winchester 75 with a 10x Lichert scope. Scored 109 - not bad for a 70+ year old rifle.

20180523_133633.jpg
CZ 452 Varmint, my NRA smallbore silhouette gun - score 116

20180523_133651.jpg
10/22 LVT, this is my timed silhouette, timed steel plate gun. Shot with Mini Mags, not the most accurate ammo but it's set up to knock over steel. - Score 106

LOTS OF FUN with some guns I don't shoot all the time.

Shot a couple pretty decent targets a couple days ago then had too do a few quick errands. Rained hard enough to ruin the targets before I got home.
Starting over.

I'm looking forward to getting back out with some different ammo ...

Amen to that! I was actually so excited to see this level of participation that I pulled the 2-7x off my old Marlin squirrel giter and swapped in a 4-16x AO, the highest magnification scope I own. I don’t know that it will help me but I’ll finally find out!
