RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - A dead woman in her casket was hit by a stray bullet during a wake in Rio de Janeiro and mourners fled in panic, police said on Wednesday.

The bullet, fired in a shootout between a drug gang and police in a slum adjacent to the cemetery Tuesday, pierced the casket inside the cemetery’s chapel and got lodged in the corpse’s pelvis. Clenilda da Silva, 49, a babysitter, had died the previous day of a heart attack.

The bullet was not removed before burial.

“This is just too sad. My God, to get shot after death,” Extra tabloid newspaper quoted da Silva’s sister, Maria de Lourdes Pereira, as saying. The newspaper said another bullet broke a window in a neighboring chapel and bullet holes could be seen on many trees and cemetery walls.

Standoffs between drug gangs and police or just between rival gangs often claim innocent lives in Rio, which has one of the world’s highest murder rates.

If it's gotta happen, that's about the best time it could happen.

Looks like the socialist government's anti-gun laws aren't working too well.

sorta yanks a kink in the

bullet proof casket scene on terminator 3. where the Guv,nor carries John Conner out of the musolem in that casket during the police gun fight. maybe it was a special casket or else this poor lady was in the paupers ine box. but at any rate i did question the premise of a bullet proof casket.

poor lady, never any peace or dignity in the world. puts me in mind of the case in Memphis where the gang banger got the idea to hid his victims under the caskets in a cemetary.

"He says he's not dead yet!"

    "Yes he is"

    "No I'm not!"

    "Well, he will be soon"

    "I'm getting better"

"You're not fooling anyone, you know"

    :D

Wonder if it was the cops' bullet or the gang's?
