Does anyone have experiences(good or bad) with the RIA M 1911-A1 ? I've been looking for a 1911 that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and the Fin,Feather,and Fur ad came today, with the RIA for $ 370.00. Is this worth it to try for a first 1911 ?

I've heard good things about them, and looking to get one myself in the near future. And to be honest, a plain-jane 1911 shouldn't cost but around $350-$400 tops which is what Rock Island is serving up. I think it's great a company is stepping up and selling the gun the way it used to be before all the overpriced "bling-bling" 1911's epidemic hit. Kudos to Rock Island.
Both of mine (well, one I gave to my dad) have worked very well. Oh the days not long ago when RIA 1911s were under $300.
Mine have not had any failures in about a couple years now. omly problem early on before modification was hammerbites. The best thing about low cost 1911s (any gun really) is the lack of thought of ruining it by doing your own home gunsmithing.

900 rounds in mine and still ticking
Before my first trip to the range I polished up the feed ramp a bit with a dremel and felt pad and some 600grit paper. Ran 900 rounds through it so far, including dirty and harsh russian steel. Prolly < 10 FTFeeds in it, unkown what those were, limp rist? bad round? bend mag feed lips? I'm very happy with the quality of this so far. At 375.00 you can get a case of ammo and a dozen mags and head to the range lower than the crazy priced 1911's out there now.

I rented a Rock Island at my local range. First 1911 I ever shot, now I'm hooked and looking at Kimbers to buy.

It's a fine gun, and unless you plan on making a mega hobby out of shooting your 1911, it will suit you well for years to come. Like anything though, the more involved you become the more features you will start to look for in any given format. My first 1911 was used, with very low mileage. A year later I upgraded to another used 1911 but this time I coughed up $1200. A year later, I bought a competition model and spent the big bucks. I can in fact outshoot all my previous versions with the high dollar model, and no, it has no bling bling, just in your hand gunsmithed perfection. The reality is, when I started shooting 1911's I wouldn't have appreciated a high dollar gun as much as I do now. As your experience grows your sensitivity to the machinery hones as well, and soon enough, you will start having higher expectations of you weaponry then an entry level model can deliver.

I have two Rocks !!! A Tactical and a GI model. I am very happy with them so far. The factory rep said the slides are milled now. These are my first 1911 pistols. All the snotty owners of the expensive 1911s kept me from buying one for years. The great customer service made me take the leap..... Try one....

I'm getting tempted to buy a RIA 1911 and then slowly adding custom parts from Wilson Combat as my hobby funds allow. I figure that I can get most of the parts I need for my "perfect 1911" this way for the cost of a Springfield MilSpec.

The better version should be around $50 or so more. It is worth the extra money unless you specifically want a GI type 1911. The sights alone are worth the extra money and the beavertail is a plus as well.
Get the slightly more expensive model if you have the chance.
