I'm in the process of convincing my parents to move out of the People's Rebublik of California and into Oregon. If I get to Oregon, I will have to make some important decisions. First and foremost, what kind of evil assault weapons to buy. I have noticed that Romanian AK-47s are very cheap. Could anyone tell me their thoughts on these guns (reliability, accuracy, recoil, etc.)
I know I can't expect much in the accuracy department, but I would still like to know.

I've got an SAR1 (7.62X39) and the top of the line Valmet. I enjoy both equally well but I paid 3 times as much for the Valmet but I shoot the SAR1 all the time. You can pay more but you won't do all that much better than the SAR.

I love mine.

Rugged, dependable, never jammed in 1000 rounds.
better sights than the norincos.

Recoil is negligible.

In a high wind I was getting 3in goups at 100 yards.

I was hitting man sized torso targets at 300 yards every time.

It came with a surplus sling, cleaning kit in the stock
one 30 rounder and one 10 rounder and a testfire bullseye target
from the factory.

For $300 it is a best buy.

No doubt about it, it's the best value in AK's going. That is unless you want one of those saiga's but I don't think they take hi-cap magazines. I put a thumbhole stock and 4X Pos-1 scope on mine, one of the most wicked looking rifles available.

I have a SAR-2, and I absolutely love it. Mine has been pretty acurate, but I've only been out to about 40 meters, so I can't boast it's accuracy so far. Buts its been relible and fun, so its a very worth and cheap investment. I highly recommend one.

SAR-1

I've been thinking of the SAR-1 lately.
These go for $340-$399 at dealers around here, it seems.
We don't have many gun shows.
I think I'll keep an eye out for one closer to $300....

Romanian AK

I've got a WASR-10, which is a single-stack converted to accept double stack magazines. Not the best way of doing it, as the mags tend to travel around a little. But it's a good shooter.

In any case, I love that gun. 100% reliable so far with around 600 rounds through it. More than accurate enough for me.

Makes a handy little home-defense gun too (I'm in a semi-rural location). I think everybody should own at least one of these wonderful rifles.

my WASR-10 rocks

I bought mine for $415, and it came with one ten-round and one 40-round magazine. I found out later that I had about a hundred bucks over the market price, but you know what? It was still well worth it. Rugged and reliable, these rifles can be field-stripped and cleaned without any tools, even by a mechanically-disinclined, white-collar, white boy such as myself. It has an accuracy of 6 MOA (minutes of angle), which translates to about 6 inch groups at 100 yards. Not nearly as accurate as an AR-15. At 300 yards, the accuracy really drops off, but who cares? Most combat takes place at 100 yards or less, so the AK's accuracy at that range is good enough, especially for since I live in a city. The AK-47 sells for half as much as the AR-15, and you can pick up 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo at a guns how for $80. Also, you can pick up a 75-round drum for about $150.00, or even $125.00 if you're lucky. With a fully-loaded 75-round drum, it has a weight of 12 lbs.

The AR-15 - likes its military cousin, M-16 - has to be religiously cleaned or else it has the tendency to jam. By contrast, the rugged AK operates in all kind of weather, can be dropped in a river overnight, and the damned thing will still function just as well the next day after you retrieve it and dry it off.

I know this is silly, but the other thing I like about the AK-47 is its mean, evil appearance. It's black, ugly, kinda boxy, and distinctive. At the range, it always gets a second look. It's a rifle that says "I'm ain't exactly gettin' ready for deer season." And since gun-banners wet their beds over those evil pistol grips, I decided to run out and buy a second, forward pistol grip for mine. If it makes some bed-wetting socialist have nightmares, so much the better!

As fate would have it, about a month after I bought my WASR-10, I saw them for sale at a local gun show for $309.00, and I was sorely tempted to buy a dozen or so. I know, I know, all our lobbyists are saying that the "assault weapon" ban will surely sunset next year notwithstanding Dubya's pledge to sign it if it reaches his desk, but I'm willing to bet that as soon as the pendulum swings back to the left and the Democrats get back the White House (Bush is a one-termer, just like his daddy) and Congress, the first thing they will do is pass another version of the "assault weapon" ban, undoubtedly something even more draconian than the current version.

BTW, if you ever buy an AK, be very careful who you tell. Once people find out that you own a dreaded AK-47, they will never ever look at you the same way again.

For the price the SAR-1 is hard to be beat. While not the best looking rifle around they are very reliable.

If you need further reinforcement - I also have a couple of SAR-1s and am completely satisfied with them. If you want to spend more money, I would get an AR or FAL with better ergonomics and more accuracy at longer ranges rather than a high-end AK (which won't be that much better than a SAR-1). If you don't like the wood stock on a SAR, you can replace it with a U.S. made black plastic Bulgarian-style stock that looks very nice, and is a little longer to fit most American shooters better. I think K-VAR makes it, but I'm not sure. I have this stock on one of my SAR's and I like it a lot.

i got the sar-1 because at the time 7.62x39mm was readily available and the new 5.45x39mm was just coming onto the market. i bought the sar-2 when it became a now a never thing when the weapon ban took effect.

now that the price of ammo has dropped, things have changed a bit. i just reorganized the garage and find that i have a couple of thousand rounds more of 5.45x39mm than the 7.62x39mm...how things change.

if i were doing it again, i would have bought two sar-2 instead. the 7.62x39mm is a typical ak clone, but the 5.45x39mm is alot more accurate and fun to shoot...ammo is only 2/3 that of 5.56x45mm
