Hi All,
New poster here so not sure if this is the correct forum to post this.
I bought a Rossi 38/357 a few months ago and originally just shot some .38’s.
They were S&B and it cycled & ejected them no problem. When I tried some reloads the extractor started skipping off the rim of the cases. I tried some .357 and it did the same. Two other Rossi’s ejected the same box of reloads with no problems.
I took the gun back and they agreed it needed repairing. 8 weeks later and after 6 phone calls, they said it was fixed.
Took it to the range tonight and nothings changed except it now spits out a live round with a spent .38.
Could anyone tell me if the extractor in the pic is extending over the rim far enough ?
I think the shop is telling me lies and they haven’t done a thing.
Thanks in advance

Doesn’t look like it to me, but the camera angle may be making it look weird.

You have the opposite issue my .357 has, that extractor spring is strong. So much that it chews up the brass rims badly and it ruins the cases for reloading.

Try calling Steves Gunz (Google for the number), he usually answers the phone and is a wizard with these rifles.

Good luck!

Stay safe.

Thanks for the reply.

Im in the UK so need to find the right time to call. Wouldn’t want it to be 3.30am your time.
Gave the rifle back to the shop today and asked them to take another look. I think the problem they have is that there’s very few Rossi spares coming over here at the moment.

You need to remove the extractor and make sure it fits freely in the groove and take off any burrs that may be present. Mine had burrs on both sides on the top where it was fitted and couldn't move freely so a fine file, used carefully took care of the problem. Then I lightened the spring so there was less resistance on closing.
I also lightened the spring on the plumger so that it didn't throw the brass so far away.

Thanks.
That was my first thought but the shop said it was fine. I’m not sure they even looked to be honest.
I put it in for repair when they agreed it wasn’t functioning correctly. 8 weeks later after they couldn’t get any spares they put it back together and said it was fine. I’m not impressed at all.
I’d have a go myself but not voiding the warranty.

Warranty!!! LOL.
Learn how and do it yourself, it's pretty simple.

Quick follow up on this one if anyone knows.

Has anyone been told or had experience of the 92 not cycling cast lead reloads and should only be fed factory ammo ?
Also, the .357/.38 probably won’t cycle .38

I’m starting to think my local gun dealer is telling porkies

The idea that the 92 can't cycle cast bullet reloads is ridiculous. Just think how many have been used in cowboy action shooting. Honestly, I don't think any of my 3 Rossi 92s have ever even seen a jacketed bullet.

I wouldn't say that a .357 "probably won't" cycle .38 ammo, but I've certainly seen enough people complain that they've had problems with it. So it could potentially be an issue. My own .357 Rossi 92 has no problems cycling .38 ammo, regardless of bullet shape, and I know many others also have no problems.

Thanks for the reply.

The place I bought it from can’t seem to fix the issues with the gun and can’t get spares.
They’re just making any excuse to get me to except it.
Time to return it and get another from somewhere else.
Nobody else I know has these issues with theirs but that’s only a handful of owners.

Sometimes you just need to cut your losses and move on. I've definitely been there.

I have no problem with mine and 38 Special. All have been handloads and cast bullets, both round nose and SWC. Like already mentioned twice, contact Steve'sgunz before giving up on it. They are nice little rifles.

Being in the UK does complicate things a bit. There must be a shop over there that can do what you need if you don't want to tackle it yourself. Ask around at the various clubs. There must be somebody that can point you in the propper direction. We have other members on here from the UK, hopefully they'll chime in soon.

I think the best thing for Lowbands to do is send the rifle back for a refund and get a different gun from elsewhere. Otherwise it will be a nightmare. One thing we don't have in the UK is a plethora of spares or gunsmiths. It's a serious issue for people buying firearms here.
I agree with the OP: he is being fobbed off now that the sale has been made. Can you advise who this dealer is?

Odd job,
Thanks for the reply.
I’ll post the dealer when I get this sorted just incase I need to involve a solicitor.
I bought a shotgun from them last year that they insisted was proofed for steel. When I checked the stamps it wasn’t. Sorry I went back but I thought anyone can make a mistake but in their case, they’re just incompetent.
I’m a toolmaker by trade and confident I could fix the problem myself but why should I.
They shouldn’t sell things with a warranty they can’t fulfill.
I’ll name and shame ASAP ?

Odd Job,
The dealer is McAvoys near Preston, Lancs.
Once again they said the problem was sorted.
Drove 25mile and tried a few shot cases through it. It ejected less than half the ones I fed through.
They then blamed my reloads.
They actually said they were all trimmed to different lengths. I had to explain that some were 357 and some were 38.
They then tried some shot rounds from the store. One ejected and the other didn’t.
They then offered a refund.
6 months later and having to get a variation on my ticket to get another gun.
Complete joke of a dealer and lesson learnt.
Thanks for the help and advice guys.
I’ll come here first next time :)
