I finally had some time to shoot my new Lyman Great Plains Rifle. During my first cleaning session, afterwards, I ran a bore light into the barrel, and noticed quite a bit of roughness in the grooves. There seems to be roughness in the form of shallow pits and scale like "smear marks" in the grooves. These tend to be about 1-2" long, and are primarily within 3" of the bore. They only occur on some of the grooves, while others are perfectly smooth. Normally I would attribute this to lead fouling, however I shot this rifle with patched roundball only, and when I probed the smearing with a touchhole pick, it wouldn't scrape away. It almost looks as if their was some flaw in the steel when they drilled and then rifled it. It bears a ressemblence to the pictures of shot out barrel throats that I have seen in borescope photos, but this is on a much larger scale. So, should I call their service department about this and complain, or is this something that everyone sees in their bore?

Call Customer Service and they'll probably swap barrels.

Generally I wouldn't worry if the bore shot true, but pits in a black powder means more crevices for more fouling and that's conducive to more rust.

Hmmm...the filter edited the word "s*c*r*a*p*e" out?

Anyway, here is an attachment pic with detail of the roughness in the bore.

Looks like its galled to me. Probably from the rifling button or bore drill being run thru at an incorrect feed rate. (thats a guess) Probably wont affect the accuracy but might make it harder to clean.

My rifle has a rough spot, probably from corrosion. Anyway, is there some way I can lap it out?

Well, about 2 weeks after sending in the old rough bored barrel,
Lyman has shipped me a brand new barrel with a good smooth set of grooves!
Just wanted to mention that they'd corrected their problem....

Yikes! That picture was frightening. Glad to hear Lyman did you right.
