I finally had some time to shoot my new Lyman Great Plains Rifle. During my first cleaning session, afterwards, I ran a bore light into the barrel, and noticed quite a bit of roughness in the grooves. There seems to be roughness in the form of shallow pits and scale like "smear marks" in the grooves. These tend to be about 1-2" long, and are primarily within 3" of the bore. They only occur on some of the grooves, while others are perfectly smooth. Normally I would attribute this to lead fouling, however I shot this rifle with patched roundball only, and when I probed the smearing with a touchhole pick, it wouldn't scrape away. It almost looks as if their was some flaw in the steel when they drilled and then rifled it. It bears a ressemblence to the pictures of shot out barrel throats that I have seen in borescope photos, but this is on a much larger scale. So, should I call their service department about this and complain, or is this something that everyone sees in their bore?
