Ruger’s Minis ?

It’s reason for existence is to make Ruger money. I can’t find access to serial numbers after 2009 but from 2005 to 2009, looks like production increased every year, 15k, 17k, 18k, 26k. If you keep making something and selling price goes up at least proportional to manufacturing cost and sales keep going up, you don’t quit making the thing.

They are certainly not P-85’s...

For me...

A Mini-14 580 Series chambered in 350 LEGEND, in conjunction with Hornady loading the cartridge with their proprietary 147 gr. 0.355" 357Sig XTP bullet...?

...would be irresistible.

I run/ran the 147xtps out of my 16" .350 AR, at about 2300fps. It's probably a little fast for them, made jello our of the pigs head i shot, and exited tho.

The 357Sig 147 gr. XTP that HDY loads in their Custom ammo is proprietary, and not in the catalog.

It's cannelured, and constructed like the 158 gr. .357 XTP revolver bullet.

As per HDY, the 9mm/147 gr. XTP bullet is rated to an impact velocity of 1200 fps Max.
The 357Sig/147 gr. XTP bullet is rated to 1450 fps.

Would be a great hunting/defense round.

Before this thread fades away, let me make sure I understood this correctly: the “Harmonic Barrel Stabilizer II” from Accuracy Systems and the various other version of it, only work with the pre-580 SN Mini-14s ? The so-called “pencil barrel” Mini-14s.

This video explains a great deal about Mini-14 accuracy problems. This video is actually a bit shocking to see the extent that “pencil barrel” flexes when fired.

When I was a kid in the 60’s there were a bunch of surplus M1’s around. If I ever shot one I don’t remember. I’ve held Mini’s, M14’s and Garands but never shot one. They have never appealed to me, maybe because of the military surplus bolt actions that were all my family had in the 60’s, other than my uncle’s Winchester 94’s. I wouldn’t mind a BAR if I could have one with a good trigger.

The 580 series with its heavier (thicker) barrel pretty much eliminated the need for any barrel stabilizer....
If you watch that video just above, you’ll wonder why it took Ruger so long to finally attempt to fix it. And have they fully fixed it? The video is actually a bit shocking to see the extent that “pencil barrel” flexes when fired.

Ancient History - regardless of how impressed you are w/ it.

The 580 Series Mini-14's are precise and field accurate, < 3 MOA with Ball ammo.

Actually that 180 series video was the most unshocking thing I have seen related to the Mini 14. Watch a slow motion video of the AK47 if you want to be shocked. My 180's all worked fine and my 580 is even better. I am not comparing them to a good AR but there does seem to be an extraordinarily high amount of unwarranted panic associated with the Mini 14.

Like you said: that was a pre-pre-pre-580
Mini-14 in that video.

I bought my $400.00 180-series Mini-14 because it was wearing a $450.00 scope and a $150.00 bipod.
In effect, they paid me to take the gun away.
I found that I liked the little gun and used it for a while as a truck gun.
I pulled the bipod and replaced the precision scope with a red dot and just rolled with it.
Now that I've picked up a new access plate, I'll probably just dump that awkward side scope mount and go back to irons.

I picked up a 580 series Ranch Rifle a dozen years ago. It's fitted with a leather sling and a Burris scope, otherwise it's stock. While I appreciate the advantages of the AR platform, I'm an old guy and I just plain like wood and blued steel. I had plenty of M16 experience in my military days, so I'm familiar with the AR. That said, the Mini has appealed to me since its intro back in the 70s. It just took me awhile to get my hands on one.

No complaints from me concerning its reliability and accuracy.
