Quality Walnut should withstand the recoil, but I’m certain my 52 yr old shoulders will crumble

I've had a bad back for over 10 years now, I've done way to many hard jobs that ruined my body.

Too much recoil will take its toll on a body. The worst effect is detached retinas in the eyes. Yes, African game loads are fun, but push it and you cannot reverse the effect. I have not experienced it firsthand, but I have read about it from those who have. Better to err on the side of caution...

my No. 1A is a 6.5x55SE which complements my Ruger 77 African in 6.5x55SE. Both great rifles and th4ey shoot to <1MOA.

    I enjoy them.

Hope it works out for you man! These appear to be very uncertain times; keep your head down and your powder dry!

I got into a mania of No 1 collecting and have five of them. They include a 450/400 Nitro Express 3 inch. I have shot it, developed a load that should work and could hit to my rather generous satisfaction. Not fun to shoot and all my shooting work was from a standing rest rather than a bench. Recoil is 'quite enough'.

Others are .257 Roberts (International version), 7x57mm Mauser, .303 British and 9.3x74Rmm (seems to be the European equivalent to .375 H&H). I have not shot the 9.3x74Rmm yet. Don't plan to shoot it. All of them ran in the $1100 and up range. I like them, would sell most of them if someone threw stupid money at me.

I have three Ruger No. 1 rifles, and will probably accumulate another one or two. I wish I had bought more of them, when they were more plentiful at nearby dealers. The No. 1 stock design seems to be a really good fit, for me, and I am left-eye-dominant, so, a No. 1 is a good, practical rifle choice, for me.

I have yet to sort-out how to post images.

450/400 is a odd looking cartridge! I missed out on a few 375h$h! about 3 years about #1’s were plentiful and cheap!
