Ruger Black Hawk Keys (effects of the S&W lock era) ?

Picked this up today and it has keys? Gun from 2009. Anybody know what these keys were for?

The mechanism is on the mainspring strut, under the grip scales. I believe there's even a pilot dimple (in factory plastic scales) on one scale so you can drill an access hole.

That is interesting, I didn’t realize that Ruger ever had internal locks, but there plenty of things I have never realized.

thanks, I’ll make a post about it, I’m going to take off the grips and look for the internal lock… very interesting that they did this and hide it way way way away

Met the law in some states but didn’t make the gun ugly. Was smart of them.

They are a pain if trying to replace the hammer spring but never an issue to me otherwise.

Grips came with the gun… the back says JB Wilson Bear Claw. Bought the whole things for around $450 with factory grey box. it’s a .44 Special

I wouldn't blame the locks on S&W, all the manufacturers caved when pressure was applied by nanny-state regulations. Blame Hillary.

Those grips are cut for the lock. As mentioned, it locks the hammer strut. The flathead screwdriver is to remove the grip screw.

I bought 2 Ruger New Vaqueros in 2005 that had those under grip locks. Stupid looking device.
And, just like the S&W locks, mine never activated while firing.

That was the Idea ... every handgun was going to be mandated that it had to have a lock to be sold in US .
But I think the Legislation fell through the cracks and it didn't become a Law Of The Land ... Thank You Dear Lord !
The screw driver was a nice touch !

I am remembering that I attempted removal of the locks from my 2 RNVs (Ruger New Vaqueros). I tried to install a “mainspring seat” for the hammer strut but the grip frame was different from the original Vaquero layout.
Later when Ruger dropped the idiotic lock from the RNV design and production one could just buy a new grip frame, hammer strut, main spring and mainspring seat and get rid of the lock works.
The cost wasn’t worth the hassle.

I have read that one can remove the lock and replace the lock with a bearcat hammer strut seat. Had a couple of Rugers with the lock- shot the same as any other Blackhawk. The only trouble with the lock models is finding grips that have the cut out for the lock.
