I have a 4" SS GP100.Its the kind of steel that you can take confort in knowing it will always fire and take care of you in time of need.If you end up giving her a name then you know its true love
I have just picked nup my 3" Talo (Wiley Clapp) gp100. Really neat; accurate and smooth shooting even with maximum load .357's. As soon as I get a holster for it I'll carry it at night; with .38 +P+ in it. A pop gun with that load.
I have a 4" blued GP100 and it does everything well. It is accurate at 25 yards, I have never had a misfire, and the action (after a little dry firing) is very smooth. I feel secure in carrying maximum pressure bear loads. It is heavy enough that recoil is minimal and it is an easy gun learn to shoot. I have a CT Lasergrip on mine and it is currently the house gun. I really like feel of my classic K frame Smiths, but the GP is just a little sturdier. A 3" 41 mag GP would be the ultimate trail gun, IMO.
I had a blue 4" GP100. The single action trigger was very nice. I loved shooting magnums out of it because it soaked up the recoil very nicely. But, it had the worst DA action I ever felt. It wasn't too bad shooting rapid fire but slow deliberate DA shooting the action would hang up about half way through the stroke and I would actually have to jerk the trigger past that point and then just before full cock the action would smooth up. I traded it to guy who wanted a stronger .357 magnum than his S&W 66.
I was going to take it to a gunsmith or send it back to Ruger but a S&W 19/66 was always on my wish list so I made a good trade. The guy I traded it to is very happy with it because he doesn't care so much about the trigger, he just wanted a gun that would handle the hottest loads. I hope to get another GP someday if I can find one with a better trigger. I also have a Security Six whose action is as smooth as any S&W model 66 or model 15. The Security Six with the Hogue Monogrips is a very nice pistol.
Dead reliable tanks that make good bludgeoning weapons if you run out of ammo. You can't go wrong with one as a HD or open carry revolver. You can run the nastiest overpressure stuff out there in it all day long and it won't care. And 38spl feels like a mouse fart.
Charlie Echo, I now have both. I just received my Talo GP100. I like them both. The 65 has had a trigger job and is the smoothest I have ever shot. The GP shoots just as well, and magnums can't be felt any more than .38's. The sights are a LOT better. A his and his.
4 yrs ago, I shot 25 x 357 magnum rounds through a rental GP100 with 6 inch barrel. My first time to shoot a Ruger revolver as Smiths are my first love.
Couldn't miss the 3" bullseye at the indoor range's maximum distance, shooting in double action...15 meters perhaps? Six months later, I owned one
IMO, a GP100 is a must have revolver, just like a Smith and Wesson 686.
I've had a standard 4" blue one for many years. Great shooter! Couldn't get used to the issue grips and changed to Pachmayer. Although a heavy piece with not much muzzle jump with 357s, on a whim, I had it Mag-n-ported after a couple of years. With the heaviest loads the barrel barely moves.
