I have been considering changing my SBH Hunter to a Bisley style grip frame and was curious if I can go Ruger direct or is that a regulated part?

You can get it direct from Ruger and fit it yourself (if you can ever catch them on a day that they have them in stock).

The stainless Bisley grip frames have become scarce as separate parts. If you can find one, latch onto it. Call Ruger and see if they are selling them again. Expect to pay almost $200 for all the parts. You also need a hammer and trigger. The grip frame will be rather rough and need fitting. Takes patience and a steady hand. You need a good sharp file and a sanding block.

Brownell's had some a couple weeks ago (bought one just because somebody finally had 'em). Keep in mind if you buy a "green" one that hasn't been fitted, it'll also need the grip locator dowel and the trigger spring retaining pin. A LOT easier to buy and install new ones than it is to try and get the ones on your current grip frame out in a useable condition. For the additional $5...well, if that $5 is too much, maybe the whole project is something to reconsider.

Blkhawk73--really enjoyed your post, until you got to the $5 part. Never swapped out a grip frame, so info was good. Will probably do it myself for the same reasons I cast bullets and reload, not to worry over $5.

The $5 is for the additional two pins that make it easier. Doing the fitting yourself saves $80 or so depending on who does the work. Just go slow, very slow. Once the material is gone, you can't put it back so check and re-check the fit often.

I agree on the pins, it's easier to install new ones than to try to remove and reuse the old ones. I keep a supply of spares for just that reason.
