Gang, as some of you may know, I’ve recently purchased a new old stock unique Ruger GP100 variant with fixed sights, 4” barrel. and chambered in .38 Special.

Well, the gun truly was new old stock still in the wrap untouched with all accesories and paperwork, but the cylinder was actually reamed for .357 magnums! I found this out by inserting some magnums just on a whim and to my surprise, they fit.

I rang Ruger on the 7th of January and they were extremely friendly and said to NOT shoot it and to send it in. Knowing it probably was just their abundance of caution yet also being irked that the cylinder and barrel were not “proper”, and wanting a true .38 Special unique variant GP100, I sent it in by using the pre-paid UPS label the Ruger people set me up with.

Today is the 19th, so just 12 days later I got the revolver back today:

Notice now it will NOT chamber magnums, just like the barrel markings describe. Despite some saying Ruger would just scrap the gun and send me a new GP100, to my utter delight they have indeed replaced the cylinder as well as the trigger and pawl, which I assume are all for timing purposes. The worksheet also said they proofed the new cylinder, test fired, and cleaned the revolver.

The gun locks up rock solid with virtually zero endshake with the new cylinder and barrel gap measures now at .006”, perfect for a fighting revolver. The new trigger also seems to be really smooth, smoother than when it left.

What’s more guys, is I actually put a couple very tiny surface scratches on the revolver from me filing a small burr inside the frame before I noticed the gun accepted magnums. The scratches are no longer there and Ruger appears to have tastefully refinished that area perfectly despite me never asking them to or mentioning it.

I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW HAPPY I AM WITH RUGER CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I’m currently choking back tears to think there’s still an American outfit that cares about there product, even if it’s a gun from a decade ago. THIS is why I love these guns. They back the buyer 100%.

GOD BLESS STURM RUGER GUN COMPANY!

Few years back I had to send in my Ruger Kodiak backpacker in 44 mag for proper fitting of the trigger guard assembly.

I don't know what they did, but the double-action pull on that revolver came back so light and buttery smooth it puts all of my pre-lock Smiths to shame. Big fan of their CS.

What a great outcome! I have been shooting Ruger revolvers since I was about 15 (I still have that one and still shoot it quite a bit). I am not sure about anyone else, but this story made me want to buy another Ruger!

Now you will have to get out there and give us a range report.

Good to hear all is right with your .38 GP!

I have had good experiences with their CS servicing two older .41 Magnums and a newer 10/22. that’s one area where they really do lead the pack. :)

Let us know how it shoots for you when you get a chance to dirty it up a bit ;).

Stay safe.

If you ever find an old Ruger rubber & wood panel grip for it, you have to get it. I find those old grips to be among the best revolver factory grips out there. The fixed sight models usually came with smaller grips and are kind of rare. I had bought mine with the larger replacement grips and switch between them and Nills, with the Ruger grips working better with speedloaders and being as comfortable.

Yes they are.
I bought a 44 Special vaquero sheriff's model a couple years ago and it shot very high called and got return set up. I sent a note with the gun asking them to leave the front sight tall so I could file it to zero. Fast turn around and got back a gun that shot a few inches low. One range trip with a file and it's a ringer.

Altamont has the Lett style grips, I got a set of the compact version for my 10mm Match Champion 20210319_150259.jpg

I had the same great Ruger repair service for my LCPIIlast summer, about 10 day turn-around and all issues resolved. Yes, Ruger definitely has their act together! I'm currently dealing with Century Arms on two defects in a new Canik Mete SFX. Nearly a week since the asked for docs to set up a RA, and no word from hem. Also the only company that has ever insisted I use an FFL to ship. Also all correspondence is by e-mail, no phone contact, just a message to use other contact methods. Like night and day... I can see this getting traded in before too long.

Ruger customer service is the reason my last 4 pistols were Rugers. The company issues no warranty for its guns. It just fixed them if they break or are not up to snuff. I had to have a fix on my LCP II. I called Ruger and explained I was not the first owner. They did not care. They fixed the problem an no charge.

Interesting, who knows what may have happened to that gun in, as you say, 10 years from the time it left the factory.

Someone may have changed cylinders.

Regardless, nice of them to make it to your wishes.

Howdy

I will always be a fan of Ruger.

Back in the late 1990s, the Attorney General of Massachusetts changed the gun laws here.

Suddenly, every model of handgun sold here had to be tested by a state agency to be sure it was safe to shoot. Among the requirements was one stating the gun had to pass a drop test without firing. The drop test consists of dropping the revolver on its hammer with a live round under the hammer. (Probably actually a blank) If the round fires, the gun fails the test. Us Cowboy Action shooters here were suddenly in a bind, because no traditional single action revolver with a Colt style mechanism will pass a drop test. Most of the manufacturers of single action revolvers simply figured there was not enough of a market for them here, so they stopped shipping revolvers here.

Not Ruger. Because all their revolvers have been equipped with transfer bars since the mid 1970s, anything they make will easily pass a drop test. More then that. Ruger sent a letter to the Attorney General of MASS stating their revolvers would easily pass the test, AND they would pay the legal fees of any dealer the AG tried to take to court for selling Ruger revolvers. The AG blinked and Ruger single action revolvers are the ONLY single action revolvers that can be sold here. And Ruger has to send each model to be destructive tested before they make the AG's list. Any model that has more than one barrel length has to be tested separately and Ruger submits them all.

Ruger really went to bat for shooters in MASS, and I will never, ever say a bad thing about Ruger.

(I know there will be lots of political comments and replies to this post, it would be great if nobody did that)

Over the course of many years, on the infrequent occasions I have needed to get with Ruger Customer Service, they have always taken care of me. Within the last couple years, they replaced a revolver for me. So when I was looking at ARs, I found a Ruger model that suited me. Part of my decision making on which manufactuer's AR to purchase, was knowing if there were any problems with the Ruger AR, Ruger would take care of it...

1. I LOVE stories like this..
2. I would buy a match champion I want RIGHT NOW if I could find one at decent price
3. Ive only got one Ruger at the moment but they will always be welcome in my house!
GOD BLESS America !
