Ruger Mark I & II

the earliest mk guns had the thumb stud on the right side of the mag. The mk2's and some of the 1's have it on the left side. Left and right side mags are not interchangable. The frame's are different.
My Standard made in 1976 has the thumb stud on the left. 9 round mag. But the stud can be moved to the right side for use on the older frame.

They are. You remove the floor plate and spring, slide the follower to the hole at the bottom, remove the nub, insert into the other side, reassemble.

off topic rant

I wish Ruger had made the Mark III as their California-compliant model and spared the rest of us the additional safety features of
(a) loaded chamber indicator,
(b) magazine disconnect,
(c) key lock on frame.

My rant on magazine disconnects:

Magazine disconnects encourage sloppiness about what should be the safety discipline of clear-the-chamber-always; as soon as you re-insert a magazine, the "forgotten round" becomes lethal again.

Plus I worry about being in the woods and losing the magazine: I would rather be left with a single shot pistol than a short club.

I looked at a new Mark III, couldn't stand all the garbage attached to it.
I feel the same about all the current generation of firearms
I have four MK II's, two 5.5 inch bull barrel Target models, exactly alike just because I can't stand the MKIII's. So when I see a used MKII, I usually buy it to add to the stable.

Ruger really screwed the pooch with the MKIII, and the billboard LCI on the SR9 and the like is just utterly distracting.

Yes, it is a real shame that Ruger up-lawyered the MK III. What a shame- the MK III could've been a great line otherwise.

I have two MK IIs, a stainless 6 7/8 Gov't bull barrel and stainless 10" target bull barrel, and will likely add one more if I can find a clean one in top condition.

Will a 10rd magazine fit a Standard Model that came with 9rd magazines (aluminum floorplate) from the factory, assuming one positions the thumb stud on the correct side?

Also I have a mark III with a standard contour barrel, it has an ugly red plastic "loaded chamber indicator" on it that the mark I didn't have. I don't know if the mark II had them or not.

MK II's do not have loaded chamber indicators. Only MK III's have them.

There is one major difference between the MkI and all of the follow on MK's.

Some damned fool decided to fix what wasn't broke.

MK I was available with 5 1/2" bull barrel or a longer tapered barrel. Both had adjustable rear sight. Also, the MK II 10 rd mag will fit if the follower pin is reversed.
