I like the mini 14's but have enough toys in 223 so thought I'd go for something in the 7.62 range. I love the way the mini 14's look and know they are an excellant rifle.
What I don't know is how well the mini 30 does. Needs some thoughts and advice please.
Thanks

How is the accuracy? What distance do you shoot it and what size groups? I assume you use the iron sights?
thanks

Don't forget the mini now also comes in 6.8mm Remington, which offers superior ballistics to 7.62x39mm.

I have both, Russian ammo costs the same, Mini-30 mags are $10 bucks more
. Mini-30 is legal for deer in all states and in the 580 series they shoot about the same, which is good! And the Mini is totaly reliable, even with cheap after market mags mine works all the time.

Mini-30, now that Ruger has factory 20 round mags its like an M1 carbine in handling but a bit more punch that the AR15 or mini-14 5.56.

I've had no luck at all with non-ruger mags in my mini-30.

--wally.

A quick check at "Perfectunion", down to "Mini 14", then "Magazines" is very informative about the vast number of aftermarket mag problems.
The two anonymous mags which came with my 30 won't feed, but my newer Promag 10-rounders are about 98% reliable.

A Ruger 20-rd. mag is the best solution.

My ('04) Mini 30 has a FTF now and then with newer Wolf and Monarch ammo, whether polymer or lacquer-coated, but only on the first pin strike.
This idea might be heresy, but if your have not owned, but consider an SKS, a $45 rear aperture sight from "Tech Sights" gives people much better results. My intent is to equip my SKS with it. This can be a better value than a Mini 30.

I still don't like the 30's basic sights (thick front post) very much, but the gun is certainly fun at the river, exploding grapefruits.

Well, I was considering the 14 in 6.8, but not sure if I want to go to an expensive ammo.

so guys.............no one seems to hot for either one. Certainly someone has some good thoughts.

Using the words "Mini-30" and "accuracy" in the same sentence is not permitted. :D

They're fun to shoot and will usually deliver 1 1/2" - 2" groups if you put decent glass on them and do your part. At least mine does anyway.

Well, I owned a Mini-30 for 1.5-2 years. I loved the feel of this rifle, and had a ton of fun shooting it. I did scope it with an older Weaver fixed power scope, and after a little trigger adjusting(and I still don't know what my Dad did to it, but it worked!) and some reloads, we were able to get 1-1/5 inch groups out of the gun. I did trade the rifle because I could not get any high capacity mags to work in the thing. Therefore, I did go the AR route, and I am extremely satisfied with what I now own in it's place, a DPMS Sweet 16 stainless barreled AR-15. You can now get the Ruger 20-round mags in it, and that is a plus. If you want one, I say don't let the bad experiences of a few persuade you not to try an excellent rifle, but be prepared to do some work to make it work the way you want it to, whether that is trigger, glass, reloads, or whatever you will.

I also had the same issue(as mentioned above) with Wolf ammo in mine, but never with brass cased ammo.

I own 2 Mini-14's and one Mini-30. I really like both and am considering adding one more of each to the stable. They are what they are meaning I did not buy them for precision shooting. They will hit what I'm shooting at 100% of the time and that's what I'm after.

Actually I have a Mini-14 and a Ranch Rifle and a Mini-30 Ranch Rifle. My preference is for the sight system on the Ranch Rifle better than the small peep sight of the Mini-14. For me anyhow, I can acquire targets much quicker using the Ranch sights.

The 7.62x39 round is my favorite round for what it is. In an urban SHTF scenario the mini 30 is the one I'll grab. For just fun plinking the Mini-14 gets pulled for duty.

A and O:

If anarchy were to break out after a disaster, the Mini 30 would fit well on the passenger seat
(in case driving could not be avoided), obscured by a shredded camo net.
As comparison, my old ('90) Mini 14 never had a single FTF with 1,500 rds., and the only ammo was Wolf and Silver Bear. I regret having sold it in the Kroger front parking lot.

Having the M 30 already and the SKS, I only sold the 14 to justify (to her) buying my first L. Enfield "Jungle Carbine".

From my view, thirty caliber rifles are just more satisfying to shoot than .223; 7.62x39, .303 or 8mm Mauser all the way.

Stupid Post

I just couldn't pass w/o commenting with all the commercials for the new Movie.
The Rugers Mini 14s/30s have to be great, that's what the old A Team used alot. It will be interesting to see what they use in the movie. The new A-Team are Rouge convicts from the Iraqi war.
