Ruger MKII problem...or not?

Guys, I need some input on this. I found a brand new MKII less the upper receiver and barrel, so really just the lower receiver, bolt, and mainspring housing. I got a Tacsol Paclite receiver/barrel and put it together without issue. It will not cycle at all with standard 'bulk' ammo such as the Federal and Winchester found at Walmart. I tried some CCI mini mags and it cycles fine.

Are these normally that finicky with ammo? Does it need some break-in before working with standard ammo? Comparing it to other MKIIs, mine takes a little more force to initially move the bolt rearward (unless the hammer is already back). I've cleaned everything, and tried running it both dry and lubricated.

I shoot only CCI in mine . Never had any trouble. Tried the bulk junk once. Lots of miss fires.

I don't think you should try to compare your gun with a standard MarkII, since most of its important bits are custom. I would hazard a guess that your chamber is tighter.

For what its worth I've had no troubles with bulk pack ammo in either of two MarkIII's. I do have a Green Mtn barreled 10/22 that will not reliably cycle with bulk pack, though it does fine with everything else.

Sounds like the recoil spring is a bit too stiff.

Might be the Paclite. My Mk.II cycles fine with bulk pack Federal and Remington. The only round I've had not cycle it was a Federal dud which just barely cleared the barrel, hit the target sideways about 6" low, and had zero recoil or report.

There's your problem. I would hazard a guess that the hammer spring is too strong and the ammo you were using didn't have enough energy to compress it.

CCI Standard Velocity works quite well in all of my MKII's - Two of which have stock Ruger uppers, two with Tac-Sol uppers, and a thrid wih a Volquartsen LLV upper. American Eagle High Velocity and Federal Standard Velocity will not cycle property in several of them.

Have you lightly oiled the outside surface of the bolt?

Next trip to the range, I'm going to try a different bolt and a different mainspring just to see how it does. Probably try some other standard velocity ammo too.
