Ruger P90TH... any thoughts or experience

Good, solid gun. Not very exciting. Shooting it is sort of like kissing your old maiden aunt.

It is the pickup truck of the shooting industry. They're solid guns, but you never see them used where folks are competing for speed or accuracy. You could do worse; you could do better.

The 345 might be a better choice, or the P-95/P-97.

I've won a lot of shoots with mine. It's almost target accurate, never fails to go bang, feeds ANYthing. I get excited about it, personally. It's the best center fire auto I've experienced. Trigger is decent, accuracy is outstanding for an out of the box gun. It is my favorite auto in my collection. It seems to almost aim itself sometimes. I love the feel of it in my hand and I trust it as much as any of my revolvers as far as reliability goes.

My favorite win at a shoot was a county law enforcement shoot I was invited to by a friend who happened to be our police chief at the time. I out-shot over a hundred competitors shooting pepper poppers. It was HUGE fun, too. You lined up side by side shooting against a competitor. You start on the outside, eight pepper poppers (four each). Last ones were set to overlap when they fell. Whoever shot his three, then the finishing popper fell first, was the winner, best two out of three rounds in an elimination, one on one. It was way fun.:D I out-shot all the glocks and 1911s and what not that day with a P90. The only gripe I have with that gun is that the single stack mags hang up on reloads sometimes. In IDPA shooting that can be frustrating. It wouldn't be the easiest gun to bevel the mag well on, either.

Just because you don't see P90s at shoots don't mean they're not capable of winning shoots in stock gun classes. They're every bit as good as any other DA pistol IMHO for such work. I think the lack of Rugers at shoots is more from gun snobbery than the ability and accuracy of the guns themselves.

What he said and more. It is one of the most over-looked and under-rated semi-auto .45's out there. It is not as sexy as a lot of .45's, but man it is reliable, accurate, and easy to shoot.

I say, go for it.

The finest production .45 currently being made---at any cost-----no I'm not kidding.

Have owned Sigs and Colts-----neither comes close to the P90.

My P-90 has become my favorite autoloader. Utterly reliable, very accurate, and soaks up recoil very well.

http://www.rugerforum.com/ is a good place to learn about Rugers, the good, the bad and the ugly.

My P90 is my ccw. I have had no malfunctions of any kind in several thousand rounds.

McGunner,

I see you put the Hogues on yours too. Made a world of differance on mine.

Yeah, I really like the finger groove grips, indexes the draw for me so my hand is always in the right place every time. The grips fill out the gun in my hand, too, more rounded and comfortable than the stock panels and less slippery.

I CCW mine or my P85 occasionally in winter. It's too bulky for summer carry, but when I can wear a vest over a T shirt, temps mid 80s or so, I can carry it. Lately, though, I've stuck with some of my lighter, more compact guns this winter.

It is quite light for a full size .45, though, at 33 ounces. It also makes a decent outdoor carry gun when loaded up hot which the gun is tough enough to take. But, I normally have a revolver on when outdoors. It's rugged and accurate enough to do outdoor duty, though, and a 200 grain pill packin' 500 ft lbs HAS to get a bear's attention. In bear country I've yet to carry it, but if I had to go concealed like in a national park...(shhhhh, I didn't say that!), it's the most powerful/suitable gun I have that would be comfortable IWB under a shirt. A 10mm would be more appropriate, I'll admit, or a SP101 with 3" barrel and hot handload .357s. The P90 is a lot easier to wear concealed than my full size Taurus M66 revolver, though, and I don't wanna think about trying to tuck my Blackhawk into a waste band on a day long hike.

BTW, I stuck an 18 lbs 1911 spring in mine that I had left over from my 1911s I rid myself of. Well, one of 'em a thief rid me of. Anyway, it is preloaded a bit in the Ruger, but works FANTASTIC with hotter loads. Probably wouldn't feed "softball", but I shoot service power loads for practice and matches and it tames the muzzle flip while helping the gun against those fire breathers I would use outdoors if I had the need. I've only fired those at the range, but the gun took it just fine. The stock P90 spring that came out of it is pretty limp.

I have the 9mm version (KP89) and love it dearly. Built like a tank, manufacturer-certified to withstand any and all factory ammunitions out there, more accurate than I am. Hogue grips and aluminum frame make it a pleasure to shoot. Taken cumulatively, no other semi-auto is better, especially for the money.

Rise from your grave, thread.

My P90TH comes in tomorrow at 3pm :)

My coworker has a P90 with the Hogue grip. At our range shooting tryouts in March 2008 he let me fire his and I really liked the feel compared to my P345. It was much heavier and it was a much different feel. I could feel the slide cycling more.

I'm going to fire 100 rounds of white box .45 JHP (my carry ammo) through it tomorrow night. If there are no problems, I'm going to demote my P345 to my backup gun. I think a backup gun that uses the same mags will be the best backup. The SR9 backup will be benched at home in the safe :)

I picked up my P90TH about 9 months ago. Love it! I've had the KP89 model for about 7 years. I just like the feel of a heavy, solid gun. I bought mine used, and had some problems initially. Turned out to be a bent extractor. Ruger sent me another one for free, and I haven't had any trouble since. I keep thinking I want to get a 1911 model, but can't really justify the cost when I love the Ruger so much.

I agree, solid and robust designe. Had a P89, what a solid gun. Built tough to last more than your lifetime and your grandkids. I just could not get over the oversize as it is. The P89 seemed too big for the 9mm. Long first shot, but great succeeding shots. Eventually sold it as I could not master the DA/SA drill.

I picked it up yesterday. Haven't had a chance to go to the range yet though.

I love the colors of the P90TH. Very nice looking.

It's too bad they only include one mag. Usually Ruger gives you two, but for some reason the TH comes with one. It's the exact same mag as my P345 anyway though and I have 3 of those.

I guess the P90 used to come with the 7 round mag until they improved the mag a little bit and made room for one more round.

Yep, They changed from a plastic follower to a metal one. The space savings resulted in another round.

My P90 is insanely accurate. I have been having some intermittent light strikes though. I have a new firing pin inbound from Ruger. Hopefully this will remedy. If not they'll send a call tag and get me straightened out.

I also have 2 P345's and owned a P97 and P89 for awhile too.

Any Ruger .45 is a good choice and they are all underrated.
